Welfare Projects in Madurai Corporation - Solid Waste Management

The city corporation has chalked out a series of welfare projects to develop the erstwhile panchayats and town panchayats annexed with the corporation recently. The civic body has planned to implement a Rs 40 crore solid waste management project for the three municipalities, three town panchayats and 11 village panchayats annexed to the corporation. The solid waste management works will commence soon as Rs 10 crore has been sanctioned.

Improving Madurai as Industrial City - December 2010

Mr.L. Vijayakumar, Chairman, Special Task Force on Employment, Ministry of Labour and Employment addressing a workshop on Industrial Development in Madurai district organised by CII and Special Task Force on Employment, Ministry of Labour, Government of India, at Madurai Institute of Social Sciences on Tuesday said that Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises should be encouraged and big players' (like Confederation of Indian Industry) help was needed and only when all industrial associations came together, industrial development in Madurai would become a reality.He said the accent should be in producing young entrepreneurs.Centre for Entrepreneurial Development is planning to make at least 1,000 entrepreneurs from 439 panchayats in Madurai during 2011, according to L. Vijayakumar.He spoke about the future plans of having bankers' meet and establishment of Entrepreneurial Development Programme Cells in some 32 educational institutions in the district.He further added that the objective of the workshop was to discuss the hurdles which were preventing industrial development in Madurai and how to overcome them.D.V.P. Raja, coordinator of the workshop, explained the need for interconnectedness between various players in the industry.A member from Madittsia opined that a trade centre was a must for proper industrial development.The participants included Arvind Srinivasan, Chairman, CII, Madurai, M. Shanmugam, Regional Director, Indira Gandhi National Open University, members from Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association and Small Industries Product Promotion Organisation, and Spinners Association.This initiative might fructify the following projects to become a reality.

Why Madurai did not become an industrial city till now? November 2011

Night City, Temple City - like that there are various names of Madurai. In that way, it has not become an industrial city anytime, though there were zillions of potential opportunities and possibilities of that happenning. Why it did not happen? Every day we keep thinking about it or talk about it when we talk about Madurai.

The primary reason to that is there were no big companies stayed in Madurai. Even one or two companies which were present in Madurai has moved out of Madurai or branched out from Madurai. Even the employees and Human Resources from Madurai are moving out of Madurai every day.

The manufacturing companies are celebrating closing ceremonies, instead of profits and bonuses. What is the reason for this situation of Madurai?

Mentality of People - Even if it is 10 Rs. there was/is a general trend that the youngsters should go for Government job. That is the safe job and there won't be any lay offs. That is the idea behind the majority of people of Madurai, because that comprises Middle Class people of Madurai.

Even parents are not willing to have their sons/daughters go for entrepreneurship. They just want their kid to go study IT, Computers, Engineering and just go work for Software companies - MNCs in different cities of India, outside Tamil Nadu like Bangalore etc., or they want their son or daughter to go to USA, Europe. What a thinking!! You think all of the people who have gone out of the country has been happy in their new land? Are they having enough money in the new land, though they might have a grat lifestyle in the new land. Change your thinking Parents and Youngsters. Try to stick to your land. and achieve here with your skillset. Start something of your own with a brilliant idea.

20 years back, there were more than 20 textile mills around Madurai, but today none of them exist and today they are being converted as Real Estate plots. Human Resource from Madurai are moving to Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Erode etc., BHEL went to Trichy. Steel Plant went to Salem. That was because Madurai did not have broadgauge Railways infrastructure at that time.

1000s of years old Madurai has problems of land or space, lack of Transport facilities, lack of broad roads in Madurai. Hence, it is better to create a new city or expand the city of Madurai to 40 kms (that is develop Madurai in the next region that is 40 kms away) and create habitat, create real estate, create industries and create employment. TVS created TVS Nagar and its surrounding areas just like that, though it was considered outer suburbs of Madurai those days. Now it is just 5 kms from the Madurai Periyar bus stand and Madurai Railway station.

Cinema is another reason for Downfall of Madurai's image. The projection of Madurai in cinemas is in bad light all the time. It shows as if there are more Caste feudalism, angry/rage people are more in Madurai. But that is not the case. Madurai people are more friendly and willing to help and with good heart.

There has been no proper politician till date who has taken 100% steps to improve Madurai. If someone takes proper focussed steps to improve Madurai, we can definitely improve Madurai and create a Great Madurai.

In keywords, here are the reasons for Madurai not to improve till date - Mentality of people, Idea of Entrepreunership, Migrating out of Madurai, Issues in Bank loans, Politics, Lack of good Leader, Cinema's image of Madurai, Ignoring Madurai in all aspects.

Though there are lot of potentials, Madurai is not being used properly. A good leader should take up Madurai and make Madurai a Great Madurai, by extending a new Great Madurai and also improve current Madurai. If more income can be created in madurai, more flourishing can be done in Madurai. Why can't the leaders of Today think of improving Madurai from a more profit oriented thinking and make it commercial?

Less power cuts in Madurai promised - Recyclying plastic as Madurai Roads - Madurai Tourist places to look cleaner

Recycling plastic in Madurai as Madurai Roads:

Madurai city corporation has come out with a plan to recycle plastic and use it for laying roads in a bid to prevent the ill-effects of non-biodegradable plastic on the environment.

Madurai corporation commissioner A Nagarajan said that to start with, one of the roads stretching up to 3-km would be laid with plastic collected from solid waste disposed in the city. "Plastic will be mixed with bitumen to lay the road. This has been tried elsewhere in the state in the past. If it is found successful, we will lay plastic-based roads at more places in Madurai," he said.

Madurai to have less power cuts:

The Madurai city may soon witness a massive strengthening of electricity distribution network aimed at preventing loss of electricity.

"As per the plan, as many as 4638 transformers would be installed in Madurai in the next four years. In Melur, where we are going to commence the project first, we will install 130 more transformers," said a Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) official. Installation of the transformers at more places would reduce the length of low-tension power supply lines and ultimately transmission loss could be reduced, he added.

This is the promise of TNEB Madurai; Let us wait and see if that happens!!

Already plastics are banned in Madurai Tourist spots. Clean up Madurai Tourist spots to happen. Plastics are reused for Madurai roads - that is the plan. If Plastics are sold or used near Madurai around the tourist spots of Madurai, then there would be spot fine of Rs.300 for the incident!

Economic Perspective of Madurai for Job Opportunities and Companies in Madurai

We are going to see a snapshot or a perspective of Madurai in terms of Economy, Job Opportunities, Employment and also in terms of Companies in Madurai.

I am seeing reports, if you are in business, you will have to use or have an Internet part of your business whatever business you are in. If you are a full-fledged Internet business that is well and good, because that is the future of advertisement and Marketing, next to the Television anyway all the times. Apart from that, if you are in any other business, you will have to use Internet in some way or other in order for your success.

Having said that, other report says that by 2015, thousands of jobs has to be created in Madurai, Tamil Nadu and in India overall. Tier-II cities are the next big players, next to the metro cities. Given a situation in US etc., there will be more than one city in a state in good shape with all the infrastructure and in terms of business. And that will happen to India as well. Indian states will also have all the cities grown very well. Madurai, Trichy, Coimbatore will be in great shape next to the capital state Chennai in Tamil Nadu soon. Tier-II cities are being looked up by most of the businesses for expansion and also new entrepreneurs are willing to open their new company in these tier-ii cities, due to numerous advantages like - lesser rent and operating cost and lesser salary expenses compared to that of the Metro cities in India. Also the source of employment starts from the Tier-II cities like Madurai, Trichy and Coimbatore etc., hence it is easy to get employees here itself, rather than having the folks migrate to the bigger cities.

Overall, more companies has to be started or more branches of the companies has to be started in Madurai. more employment and more jobs has to be created in Madurai. Things has to change and improve soon in Madurai gradually and it is happening gradually. Automatically if more jobs are created in Madurai why people will migrate and also lifestyle will improve in Madurai and eventually things will be great in Madurai.

NABARD sactions Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) assistance Madurai Tamil Nadu Districts

The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) has sanctioned an Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) assistance of Rs 765 crore for Tamil Nadu in 2011-12. The assistance would help the state execute infrastructure projects across various sectors covering drinking water, irrigation and rural connectivity.

In a press statement issued by Lalitha Venkatesan, chief general manager of Nabard, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, it was stated that the assistance also includes an amount of Rs 226 crore, sanctioned for the first time, exclusively for creating warehousing infrastructure by establishing 1,281 godowns with a total storage capacity of 434,000 tonnes.

An amount of Rs 157 crore has been sanctioned for a project which will provide drinking water supply to four unions in Madurai district involving 753 rural habitations.

This proposal is a part of Melur Combined Drinking Water Supply Scheme being implemented by the Tamil Nadu.

On completion, the project will provide 40 lpcd assured drinking water supply to 626,000 rural population.

Madurai247.com, so far one and only blog of Madurai has plans to launch a lifestyle cum general improvement magazine in Madurai.

Madurai Mattuthavani Bus stand improvement and government taking action on a petition

I happenned to visit Mattuthavani bus stand in a month back and posted this article http://www.madurai247.com/2011/06/madurai-mattuthavani-bus-stand-is-dirty.html in Madurai247.com and also sent an email petition to Madurai Collector.

Yesterday I visited again and things have changed drastically in Madurai Mattuthavani bus stand. I feel really proud of our officials in this case.

Here are some photos quickly, since I had to rush to my bus and did not have much time.

New row chairs, many shops are taken out and the bus stand looks more spacious now, many warning signs and boards, many enchroachments and cleanliness is brought into action. But only challenge is it has to continue.

One interesting thing is - I was suprised to see some big shops taken out, which I never thought it was an enchroachment!! I was surprised to the core, since I used to have tea/coffee in those shops very often!!





One another thing is - even though I was proud of the signs like "FINE" for urination in public areas, just near to that board people were "pissing"! People should also change, when Government is acting on good things!

Without the fare listing of urination, toilet facility usage, they were collecting more money - now that will not happen again! Good move, after our petition.

We (New Madurai Foundation) is very happy about this move from the Collector and it is great to see that our email petition to the government works!!

Madurai in improvement path with the Collector U Sagayam

Recently we are seeing news in Madurai very dramatic, very cinematic but all of them are true.

With the collector U Sagayam taking over, we are seeing good news in terms of improvement and regulating certain irregular things and rectifying many unlawful things.

We emailed Collector with a complaint about Mattuthavani bus stand and in just 2 or 3 days we heard that there was a raid in Mattuthavani Integrated Bus stand in Madurai. Many encroachments, untidiness and irregularities were pointed out. Action was/is taken for the consumer complaint.

Within couple of days Periyar bus stand and Arapalayam bus stands were also raided and action is being taken against irregularities.

In just couple of days, after KPN omni bus accident, there were checkups in the highways with omni bus for its standards and tax payments and various other formalities with omni buses.

This is all happenning with Collector doing his duty with the help of his officials and the help of Commissioner.

Looks like we are in great hands and things will come out great!!!

Collector sir - we are expecting much more like this and we wish you can make Madurai a New Madurai and a Great Madurai!!!

Madurai: The Regional IT Hub

With the recent series of industrial developments Madurai has been experiencing, this area is seemingly becoming the regional information technology hub in India.

Some of the companies that are now operating in Madurai include TVS Srichakra, Fenner, and Madura Coats. There are also many business process outsourcing companies that are flourishing in Madurai. Since many companies are operating in the area, more opportunities are now becoming available for those living within the region.

In a report released by the Confederation of Indian Industries, Madurai actually has the potential to be a manufacturing hub, which can be packaged as a gateway to economic opportunities. This is aside from the fact that Madurai has long been considered a tourist spot which has been giving birth to job opportunities. In addition, the government has put much attention in economically developing the Madurai district to invite more investors in the area. In the past years, many industrial estates have been built in various key areas in Madurai to give way to the booming economic activities here that are mainly about information technology. Some of the industrial estates that are currently operational include:

Due to the presence of educational institutions and the quality labor force available in Madurai, more information technology firms and other companies are becoming interested in expanding their businesses in the area.

Madurai, also known as the Temple City, has indeed come a long way in terms of economic development and opportunities. For many years, it was Karnataka and New Delhi which dominated the IT landscape in India.

Now, Madurai is slowly adapting to this growing field. The IT landscape of Madurai is now dominated by huge companies such as HCL, TCS, and Honeywell. A lot of small and medium firms are also thriving in the city, and some others are planning their expansion.

On the average, Madurai and its neighboring cities can produce at least 15000 university graduates every year. There have, however, been some issues of concern related to the English proficiency of these students. Despite this, IT firms are constantly hiring employees in Madurai and nearby areas, since the area produces at least 9000 engineering graduates annually, which is of course an important field in the IT industry. Even if these graduates are not that proficient in English, they are known for their skills and talents as workers, prompting employers to hire them.

According to a NASSCOM research, “Madurai still needs to work on its local and international connectivity as well as other basic infrastructure before it can become a viable IT-BPO city.” This is one thing the government has been trying to work on that could further improve the economic state of Madurai.

As of this writing, more information technology and business process outsourcing companies are eyeing operation in Madurai that could give more employment opportunities to the city’s residents and those of neighboring areas as well. It may thus certainly be said that Madurai has become the IT hub of the southern part of India.

Traders welcome Madurai road improvement plan

The Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association (TFMA) has welcomed the announcement of the comprehensive road improvement plan by the Madurai Corporation. On December 31, the Mayor of Madurai Corporation, Ms Thenmozhi Gopinathan, and the Commissioner of Madurai Corporation, Mr S. Sebastian, announced in a press meet that a comprehensive mobility plan at a cost of Rs 1,640 crore to improve the road facility with two stretches of elevated corridor and five new bridges on congested junctions has been proposed. Mr S.V.S.S. Velshankar, Secretary, TFMA, in a release, while welcoming the announcement, urged that the facilities should be completed at the earliest opportunity.

Statistics for Brain Drain from Madurai

Need to book train for your hometown (either Madurai or down South) from Chennai during festivals? You will need fast internet & also fast fingers to get a berth!!

Nov.5, 2010 is the Deepavali last year. Reservation for trains for Nov.3, 2010 started on Aug 5th 8.00AM. It seemed thousands of youngsters were waiting on the start line at their Computers with bated breath.

When the reservation is officially available, all the berths on Pandian Express (most preferred train to Madurai) is full within 8 minutes and 2 seconds! Now, that’s a record!!

Nine other trains to Southern destination were full in another 6 seconds!. Perhaps these records will be bettered in future

Railway authorities ruled out irregularities & say 70% of tickets were booked through the net. bulk booking, booking by agents were blocked on that day.

It only shows all the brain drain from Madurai & down south. Fresh engineers & graduates from Madurai were forced to move at least to Chennai / Bangalore for opportunities.

Madurai has the basic infrastructure, better than many state capitals. It deserves to do better on the job front. Rather than expecting business men from up north, Madurai’s business class must rise to the needs.

SIDA Meet at Dot Com Infoway Madurai

The Annual Planning Meeting of SIDA (Software Industries Development Association of South Tamil Nadu) was held at the premises of Dot Com Infoway’s Madurai office on December 22, 2010.

SIDA (Software Industries Development Association of South Tamil Nadu) was formally launched in October 2010 with the primary objective of supporting local software services companies to achieve international standards and thereby, create a conducive environment for Information Technology in South Tamil Nadu, India. As a part of the forum’s activities, an Annual Planning Meeting was held at Dot Com Infoway’s Madurai office premises recently, on December 22, 2010.

The President of SIDA, Mr. R. Sivarajah of Winways Systems Private Limited welcomed the members and briefed the establishment process of the forum and spelled out objectives of the meeting. He also briefed on the work plan for the year 2011. The Secretary of SIDA, Mr. Ashwin Desai of A&T Network Systems announced the proposed structure of the forum, including that of the chairpersons for SIDA’s various panels.

The office bearers for the year 2011 will be as follows: Mr. R. Sivarajah – President; Mr. A. Kathirkamanathan and Mr. C. R. Venkatesh as Vice Presidents; Mr. Ashwin Desai as Secretary; Mr. Shivakumar as Joint Secretary; and Mr. P.Varadarajan as Treasurer. The panel for Human Resource Development will be headed by Mr. C. R. Venkatesh while Mr. A. Kathirkamanathan will be the Head of Finance and Fund Raising panel. Mr. Srinivasan will lead the panel for Business Operations Support and Mr. S. Radhakrishnan will be panel head for Business Development.

The members of SIDA discussed about various issues related to the software industry in South Tamil Nadu. They demanded Elcot to provide projects related to South Tamil Nadu to the software industries located there. They also planned to organize a Road Show in Chennai and Bangalore as a step for brand creation. The members were also advised to purchase land in Madurai SEZ with a vision to form a cluster in the near future.

As the Chairperson of HRD, Mr. C. R. Venkatesh of Dot Com Infoway handled a session on Human Resource problems faced in a tier II city like Madurai. He said that the best and usual method for hiring is through job portals and people mostly hire from other cities like Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kochi. The company has to offer outstation candidates a relocation bonus, in addition to the allowances for food and accommodation. So, to tackle this problem, “70 percent of the employees are appointed as freshers” in his company, he added. Further, in his speech he said, “Poaching is a main problem here in Madurai and we should stand united to curb it.” Other members also shared their views about the united initiatives SIDA needs to take to curb problems faced by IT companies in Madurai and South Tamil Nadu.
