Some of the things I like(d) in Madurai

I would like to get up early in the morning, get ready and take my dad's moped (as i remember in childhood) and go to Perumal temple near Crime branch Periyar bus stand madurai. This temple is in fact small and beautiful. I park the moped just opposite the temple, which I think costs Rs.2 (it might have increased by now). Then give off my chappals to the chappal stand, which I think is free.

I get into the temple and it has its own temple smell. It is in fact a pleasant smell in the early morning. Note that this is before 6:30 or 7 in the morning.

Lord Vishnu's vigraham is huge in this temple and we can pray without any hassles in this temple, compared to other perumal temples in india. Also, this temple has less crowd usually, so it is easy and close view of the lord.

After done with temple, I would go to a tea shop or magazine shop and buy a "The Hindu" newspaper. Buy a "Week" magazine. Go back home and have a coffee and read newspaper front to end, except Sports section. Usually i am not interested in Sports section.

In the pre-noon time of the day, I would go and play street cricket with my friends near Jaihindpuram

In the mid of the day - I would go near Madura College and right opposite there are water melon carts in which slices of water melon are sold. i enjoy the water melon and/or pineapples sliced and touched with red chilli powder and salt.

In the afternoon, I would have lunch prepared by my mother. After that take some rest at home:) take nap! In the evening, after coffee, spend some time with friends near by and go to town hall road area and walk up the street. Eat boiled groundnut sold in the carts. This is a main street in Madurai and in the central area of Madurai. I have liked more of Central and Southern Madurai, because I grew only in southern part of Madurai. Southern part of Madurai is actually the one which is in the southern side of the Vaigai river in Madurai.

Also - after sometime, have soup on the road:) I know it is unhygienic, but it is good stuff - I have enjoyed for sure.

After that, in the night have dinner. Go for a walking around TVS nagar. Pretty much touch Kovalan nagar, TVS Nagar, Srinivasa Road, Jaihindpuram area, Sathya Sai Nagar area etc., I really enjoyed this walking in the night in Madurai area.

Note - these were some of the things I enjoyed in Madurai, when I was a bachelor and was taking a month break between my work at Bangalore.

Madurai Bus Boarding - Madurai People

If I have to board a bus in Madurai, Chennai or anywhere in India - I will have to be a fit person. There will be bunch of people standing in the bus stop waiting for the bus. It is survival of the fittest. If you have to get on to the bus, and when the bus comes to the stop, the bus will be already loaded with full of people.

People hanging in the foot board of the bus. When the bus comes to the bus stop, the bus stops and the foot boarders get down for you and others waiting in the bus stop to get in. It is interesting, we don't know where is the space for people to get in. People get squeezed in inside the bus.

Foot-boarders help people to get in, but at the same time - you will have to be fit to get into the bus. If you are not capable you will not be able to get in.

Anyway, the point I was getting to is - in foreign countries, people stand in queue to get into bus. People don't even touch each other before they get in. I would not agree if you tell me about population. Population is less in other countries, but even in popular populous cities like New york, this is still the case - No one touches each other. People in NY wait in lines before they get into train or bus.

Overall, at one point I am hoping people in Madurai and other cities in India will wait for turns.

Madurai Taekwondo - a martial art - Korean Karate - CK Nagaraj

In my school days, my mother enrolled me and my Madurai brother into two courses. As I have told you before, my mother had a vision. She wants her children to be well equipped before we encounter the real world.

One was Hindi class provided by Dakshin Bharath Hindi Prachar Sabha and I successfully passed "Praveen" exam. This is supposed to be equivalent to BA in Hindi.

Another was Taekwondo. My brother completed Taekwondo - Black Belt. I completed the Brown Belt, which is just before Black Belt.

We used to study in the TVS Nagar branch, which was opposite TVS Lakshmi Matric School. Taekwondo is a great martial art, but from Korea. Taekwondo is more of an art with the leg, when compared to Karate, which is all of hands. Taekwondo is more of leg and less of hand. Taekwondo is also called Korean Karate. Taekwondo is one of the asian(korean) martial art, like Kung fu and Karate.

CK Nagaraj was our master and he is a great teacher and a great person. He is a good friend of us and our mother knows him very well. I am grateful to the Taekwondo master Nagaraj. He is a member of Lions Club as well. CK Nagaraj had received even 3-5 DANs(levels) in Black Belt of Karate.

One interesting point is - TVS Nagar branch still exists and even today master is teaching in the same terrace of the building opposite our school.

By the way, 24th January and 25th, 26th - state level competition is planned to happen in TVS Lakshmi Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Madurai.

I am grateful to this master CK Nagaraj. As a return gift, I am posting this article dedicated to Mr.Nagaraj, Taekwondo Black Belt in Madurai.

For further details - please contact -
Channa K. Nagaraj, C 249, VII Stop, Kamarajar Street, Tirunagar, Madurai-625 006. Mobile:9843052449.

For you reference - an article by "The Hindu" about Taekwondo in Madurai recently.

minimum salary required to run middle class in madurai?

Madurai is an interesting and unique place, like many cities in India - in which we can live with any kind of money.

Middle class article written before.

Even with Rs.2000 per month, you can get your life with family going. You can even live with Rs.1,00,000 per month. It is all about afford-ability.

You can go to the local street idly shop and have a nice breakfast with even Rs.3(equivalent to one cent in USD). Can you imagine to do the same in a city in any other country?

You can also go to a star hotel in Madurai and have the breakfast on the table for even Rs.300. You can live to both extremes.

However, who is middle class in Madurai? Middle class in Madurai is somebody who would not go to the streets and eat! Middle class is somebody who would not go to the star hotel and have their breakfast. Middle class is somebody who gets the groceries from shops and cooks at home and anything he/she wants prepares at home and be happy with what they have.

Highly budgeted about personal finance. They know how much they get as income every month. Middle class in Madurai learn to live with what they have and make in every month. Usually they always run month to month with their salaries. Middle classes are highly community oriented and they are clubbed within the relatives for their rest of the lives.

Here is a list of items - they need every month. Please put it in a sheet of paper of excel spreadsheet and fill it up for yourself.

House Rent
Petrol and Auto expenses
Monthly Bills
Phone
Electricity
Internet
Groceries
School Fees
Going out and Shopping
Restaurants
Medical Expenses
Loan Installments
Insurance Payments
Parents expenses

If you are setting up a middle-class family in Madurai, here is what you will need.

Car (optional - depends - mostly upper middle class)
Furniture
Bike
Bicycle
Kitchen Utensils

If you use these data points and fill it up for yourself, you would get some idea about what would you need every month to get your middle-class family going in Madurai.

Depending upon your cost you enter, you can determine, if you belong to middle-class family or upper-middle class family in Madurai. Again, I would say, if you want to lead a middle class life - it might take Rs.10,000 per month for a middle class family to run, excluding any loan needs you might have and your own home you might live in.

Please bear in mind, there is lot of inflation these days and all the prices have hiked up. Check up for your current needs and rates, before you act after reading this article.

Madurai Tea shop - a speciality beverage in Madurai

Earlier, I have written about Madurai Tea shops - click here to read, but please come back to this article.

Madurai Tea shops are special. You want to know the reasons, here are they -

* 365/24/7 you can get tea.
* tea with a combination of murukku anytime. But in special times like evenings, you get bajji, vada etc.,
* You are treated royal, if you are decent enough in dressing.
* 1/2 tea can be ordered. that means one tea can be shared in two glass tumblers by two individuals.
* Tea is served in glass tumblers with 3/4'ths filled with tea. Smoke is also sold anytime, even one-by-one. - 'Bossu cigarette saapteengalaa bossu?' - 'bossu neenga cigarette saappudra palakkam irukkaa?'
* A friendship is shared with a tea. - 'Bossu teaa saappudunga bossuu'.
* A conversation is started with a tea.
* A Thanks is conveyed with a tea.
* On an average, men drink like 3-5 teas in a day, when they go out.
* 'paal-tea' can be ordered - which has more milk in it. that is why it is called paal-tea.
* Any corner street or main town place you go, you can get tea.
* The number of tea shops in Madurai is infinite.
* you also get other beverages - coffee, horlicks, bournvita...
* Even in hot sun and middle of the noon - madurai folks would be drinking tea, instead they should be drinking cool drinks.
* A tea used to cost Re.1 and 50 paise. But today, it costs Rs.2, 50 paise and Rs.3.

Madurai Tea shop is Madurai's Starbucks coffee place, as in US.

What if I have to setup a tea shop and consider it as one of my businesses?? Yes, it is possible. There are two ways - either setup a roadside shop or setup an upscale one like Coffee Day or any Coffee Bar etc., as my friend used to like Visalam Coffee Bar - I have never been there...

It is a real good business to setup a tea or coffee shop in Madurai. It will turn out to be a good profitable business...Think about it!!

Challenges faced by entrepreneurs in Madurai

There are n number of challenges faced by Madurai budding entrepreneurs.

Here is a previous post, with a case example of the challenges faced by budding entrepreneurs.

I know a friend of mine, who is in Madurai. He is a mechanic by profession and he did not want to work for some else all his life. He wants to start his own business.

There are two kinds of entrepreneurs - small business owners.
1) One is who want to just earn for their daily expense and keep life moving.
2) Another is who want to reach heights and expand their business to a great degree.

The mechanic to-be-entrepreneur I am talking about falls under first category. The challenge he faces is the basic thing. He is already a family man with a wife and a school going little daughter. He does not have a capital. He does not have enough money to lead his family and at the same time cannot do business at this time.

Another challenge for entrepreneurs is location. Some people are not in the location of business, they desire. This is also one of the challenges.

If you are facing any other challenges, before starting any business in Madurai - please post your comment.

Dependant or Inter-dependant Society: Madurai

This article is a follow-up to an article I wrote about a budding entrepreneur. Here is the previous post. Please read the previous post and then read the following...

Today, I called this Mr.X(Name hidden for privacy) and came to know that there is lot of family pressure, against his business ideas and entrepreneurship and risk-taking-attitude. His father-in-law and brother-in-law are opposing for his venture, instead they are expecting him to go for a job.

There is no independence for this guy! What is this? It is his life! He, his wife and his son is a family. How can somebody else interfere in his life? well...hold on... This is Madurai...Madurai is an inter-dependent and dependent society. This is not west, I understand that...However - there is too much control on one's life.

Why should this guy listen to his in-laws? I guess, that is how it is! In fact, in-laws will help, if there is a need and no one would come forward...

In today's modern culture, there is no joint family culture, however there is a virtual joint family culture still existing in Madurai. Even though physically members of the family don't stay together in a same house, still they are together virtually atleast in decisions and for happiness or sadness.

This inter-dependency definitely does not help at all for entrepreneurship!! Hope this changes/improves.

My Madurai Mother - part II

I have written about my mother in one of the earlier posts. Here is the post, click here

My mother was born to Parvathathammal and Sellaiyapillai. Parvathathammal even sold idly and paniayaram in streets for their daily expenditure and to bring up her children. My mother's mother was a very hard working person, hence I guess my mother also became a hard working person. It all depends on parents only for how the children would be.

Three days back, my mother had a eye surgery for cataract. One good thing in Madurai is - Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai. Operation was successful and Aravind Hospital is doing great!

One unfortunate thing is - I and my wife are not there to help my mother, when she needs us. She had been there for us, when we needed and today we are not there to help her. However, my eldest brother who is Doctor is there to help my mother.

In my childhood days, when my mother is out to office or any relative's function, we would wait for her and we(brothers) miss her a lot. We would wait and watch the door for my mother to come back.

She would bring Masal Kadalai from the corner shop. I like those masaal kadalais very much. I used to fill the masal kadalai into my trouser pocket or shirt pocket and slowly eat.

Anyway, even though I am far away from you my mother - I am always thinking about you and I will come to you soon for helping you.

My mother series will continue...

Jaathagam in Madurai: Moola Nakshathram

My wife's friend who lives in Madurai - is now of age 34 and she is not getting married due to some societal reasons. Do you know what is the reason?

Jaathagam - paazhaappona jaathagam. Looks like she has Moola Natchathiram. Moola Natchathiram is one kind of star, and it seems that not a great star.

If you have moola nathcathiram(moola star or moola Nakshthram), then there are so many restrictions for marriage. Moola star is not compatible with any star person, it seems. If you marry a moola star person, then your father would die - this is what astrologers say! Isn't it crazy?!

That is the reason, our friend is not getting any alliance for her marriage!!! It is like Tamil Comedy Actor Vivek says - "Aayiram periyaargall vandhaalum, ungallai thirutha mudiyaathu"!!!

Kili Josiyam - Astrology with Parrot, parrot astrology, palm reading, numerology, vaastu sastra: Madurai Astrology

Kili Josiyam - Astrology with Parrot: Madurai Astrology

As you know Madurai is famous for the astrology, in number of different ways.
How to check out the future? Madurai people are crazy about the parrot astrology, palm reading, numerology, vaastu sastra, nameology, kuri sollrathu(Verbal astrology by touching hand with a little stick), saamiyaar(priest) etc.,

For some astrology in madurai might make lot of sense, but for some it might mean stupidity. Why should I rely on a parrot for my future. The future is in our own hands.

If you are wondering what is parrot astrology(josium), here is an explanation -
A man sits on teh streets with his little carpet. His forehead is filled with sandal powder, holy ash and kumkumam. He looks lot holier than he is. He is clad with dhothi and a shirt. He has a little cage, which has a green parrot in it - red peak.
Also a bunch of cards, which has photos in it.

What he does is - if you request for a session, he agrees to you and he tells(gives signals) to the parrot to come out and take a card and give it to him. In fact, if you closely notice, the man will give the parrot something to eat, as a token everytime the parrot takes the card for him. Anyway, that apart, your future is told based on the photo in the card. Crazy, isn't it?!
It usually cost Rs.10 - one fourth of a US dollar.

Madurai Palm Reading - By seeing your palm's lines, the astrologer would say your future! Again Crazy!!

Madurai Numerology - Based on various numbers involved in your life, your future is decided! That is the philosophy and again crazy!!

Madurai Vaastu Saastra
- House or a building is built based on a particular ancient science called Vaastu saastra. I have even seen existing buildings demolished for renovating based on vaastu. Crazy!! Some believe it - i respect their belief.

Madurai Nameology - Based on your name, your future is decided - Crazy!!

Madurai Kuri Sollrathu - Most Crazy stuff! The lady who tells you kuri, has a big red bindhi.

Madurai Saamiyaar(Priest)
- Pray the god, instead of men and women!

Madurai Sex & Madurai Beauty/Madurai Girls/ Madurai Women

Madurai Sex & Madurai Beauty/Madurai Girls/ Madurai Women

Sex is a very pure concept - theoritically and practically!
It is all about perspective. It depends on culture.
If you are a westerner, sleeping around with differnt women is fine, but if you are a easterner, it is not. Whatever, it is - after marriage - you have to have Sex with only one person. That is something both westerner and easterner agree to.

From Madurai perspective, Sex is something, which has to be had and enjoyed with only one person - throughout your life. I agree with it and it is correct.

Since Madurai is a conservative community, even talking about sex might offend someone or elders. Better not talk about it.

There is an advantage to having sex with only one person throughout your life - you prevent lot of STD(Sexually transmitted diseases) like AIDS spreading around and our health is also good.

It is good for health to have sex once in a day with your spouse - in other words it is good for your heart. It reduces the risk of heart failure.

Do you know Madurai has too many sex workers (prostitutes - who trade body/sex for money) than many other districts of tamil nadu? I believe the count is reduced these days. Do you know Madurai has more HIV affected patients in the Government Hospitals
than most of the other districts of tamil nadu? sad, but I think it is true.

Soceity has to grow up further and young adolescents have to get Sex education, and be aware of good and bad. They should be literate enough not to do anything wrong. The youngsters has to be motivated enough to make sure they are walking towards their
goals, instead of doing some wrong things in their youth stage.

Madurai Wisdom: Hard work and Persistency pays off

Madurai Wisdom:

As we have talked about setting goals, we need to work hard and be persistent.
In order for us to achieve the goals, we need to keep doing the stuff needed.

If we are quitting, we are never going to achieve what we want to achieve.
Quitting is a worst thing any achiever would do.

Even if we fail, we will have to keep hitting the wall to have the wall broken. Only exception is - if you find that it is a wrong wall, you need to quit and find some alternate arrangements.

Anyway, you will see joy, if you get the taste of success - out of your persistent hard work.

Madurai Wisdom: Goal is clear - no one can stop

Madurai Wisdom:

Once the goal is clear, no one stop you in this world.

First of all, we need to set goals for life - short-term, mid-term, and long-term.
Write it down and it has to be by-hearted too. Anytime you should be able to say, where you are going.

All of the time, it has to ring bells for you to go towards that track to achieve what you want to achieve. Once it is loaded into your mind, then automagically you will be doing things towards that particular goal.

Once you realize that you are on your track and you see indications of success, NO ONE can stop you.

Changes in Madurai - Positive and Negative

Change is needed from everyone in the city.

As per Bhagavad Gita, Change is only permanent thing in this world.
Considering the positive changes about to happen to madurai, there is change expected certainly.

The existing people in madurai might have been living in a certain way.
Now that there are changes expected, existing people in madurai might get affected.

The simplest people in Madurai might not be able to cope up with the changes happenning in madurai.
If the simplest people in madurai change themselves to the curve of madurai, then they also get benefitted.

If not, there are some serious problems awaited for these people. You better catch up with the change.

Agriculture might get affected due to the change in the city. Agriculture has to be modernized and improved, instead it should be avoided for the brighter sides of the city.

In addition to all that - most importantly madurai culture will be left behind. The culture of people living together, whatever problem happens or whatever happiness amidst the family. Relationships will be affected. Faster life is going to affect everyone, in a way that everyone is going to look for money and no hearts.

This is definitely the negative side of the whole positive change.

God Bless Madurai!!

Madurai Real Estate Boom?!

Sponsored by OruAcre.com

Real Estate Boom

One of my friend was asking if all the things happenning in Madurai are:
Hype or Reality?!

My answer to him was Yes and No.
Why I say Yes:
By March 23rd Dr.Kalaignar Karunanidhi is coming to Madurai and he is inaugurating the IT Park location.
This is reality.
So, things are happenning. Corporates like HCL, Satyam etc., are buying land left and right in Madurai.
This is reality.
Real Estate is booming - this is reality and a hype too. Whoever has money invests into it. Once Madurai becomes a developed city, then comes the real return of investment for whatever you might have invested in Madurai.

Hype is what people make about more than what it appears in Madurai to NRMs. NRMs do not see it first hand. So, whatever happens, NRMs get the news second hand and they have to believe it. At the pessimistic person's suspicious eyes, it looks like it is a hype. Not for everyone. We will see once it happens.

Whatever it is - all said and done -
Definitely something is happenning and
it is a reality for Madurai to become a GREAT MADURAI!!!

Reverse Brain Drain to Madurai

As you know, I have explained in one of my previous article about NRMs. This word is similar to NRI - Non-Resident Indian.
NRM denotes Non-Resident Maduraiite. Isn't that a cool name?
This word includes all the individuals who reside outside madurai for various reasons, but track madurai happennings, or have relatives in madurai, have done schooling or college in madurai. OK, from now on I will denote those individuals as NRM, in the rest of the article.

NRMs are keeping track of Madurai through the news media and their relatives or friends at Madurai.
Seeing the progress and so called "Hype" happenning in Madurai, everybody is excited.

All the NRMs are having an idea of coming back to Madurai and live in Madurai. This is definitely a reverse brain drain for Madurai and this is expected to happen in a time frame of 4 to 5 years.

You might have read the previous article, which has a possible collection of things expected to be built in terms of commercial interest and infrastructure improvement. That definitely interests lot of people and NRMs will be definitely interested to come back to MADURAI.

Good for Madurai!!

!!!!Madurai Land near IT park on SALE!!!!

Sponsored by OruAcre.com

This is a mail from one of our very close contact, who has a reliable plot on sale in Madurai, near the land allocated/designated for IT park.

Here are the details:

1) They have around 14 acres of land, almost around Rs. 3+ crores.
Including registration and other costs, every cent(1 cent = 426 sq. ft) would cost Rs. 20,000.
2) The seller is very reliable and our close contact.
3) Land will be flawless at any level of historical records.
4) The seller would help the buyer with any verification, registration and all kinds of procedures. The seller will make sure there is always lesser thing to worry about.
5) The seller would help with the loan process.
6) The market forcast is that even in 1 or 2 years, the land value has to go up. If you hold it for 3-5 years, the land value would skyrockett like anything!!!

The seller told me that these lands are in high demand and it is expected to raise in value every day. All the corporates and big shots are buying lands here left and right, since people have got lot of money.

If you are interested, please let us know by contacting at mrkathiravan@gmail.com and/or sselvan@gmail.com. We will take it from there.

Forward it to your friends, if it would interest them.

Free Medical Camp in Madurai

Dear all,
I am travelling to India for a very short trip of 2 weeks by July 15th to July 30th.
Amidst my personal activities, I would like to execute a project on behalf of New Madurai Foundation, by this visit as well.

I am wondering what if I will execute the FREE MEDICAL CAMP project in one of the rural localities in the outskirts of Madurai.

Project Summary:
This project is in the conception level right now, and I need to document little bit and prepare a budget for this.
Basically, we will choose a rural locality near Madurai and get approval from Panchayath for a medical camp of 5-6 hours in a day.
We will get approval in the village school or in a shady area in the village.
We will request for 2 to 3 doctors in Madurai to be available in the camp and serve the public.
We will request for some youths and friends to be available for this.
The expenses will be taken care by New Madurai Foundation.

Expenditures, I could think of on the fly -
1. Cost of Medicines to be used at the Medical camp site for the patients - Tablets, Syrups, Disposable Syringes etc.,
2. Additional Help from local youth - refreshments for them
3. Honorarium for 2-3 Doctors
4. There is NO invitation costs, advertising, brochure etc., It is all going to be oral announcements.

The 95% of the money is going to go only the medicines. Rest as mentioned above.
Today, I noticed that New Madurai Foundation bank account has Rs.1475. I will be contributing at the minimum of Rs.1000.
I need to make a proper categorized budget anyway, to determine what could it take and also I need to talk to the doctors about their estimate on the medicines, I am going to talk to them for their approval anyway.

Even if we consider the budget as Rs.10,000, I will need help to do the same, on behalf of New Madurai Foundation - from a monetary front.

You don't need to transfer right now. Please give me a word saying you will be able to contribute an amount to newmadurai@gmail.com.
Even Rs.40(one US dollar) is a good enough charity.

Since the amount is not huge, I am limiting the people I am asking. You are the cream people I think of, when donating to New Madurai Foundation.

Once I do
(i) some more documentation,
(ii) get approvals from Doctors and Panchayaths,
(iii) Preparation of the prorperly categorized budget and
(iv) after checking the feasibility

I shall let you know to transfer the amount you might wish to or the amount you mention in the mail to newmadurai@gmail.com .
Also please let me know what do you think about this project frankly.

If you want to transfer in US, I can give an US based bank account number or in India New Madurai ICICI account number or if you want to send a cheque by post, I will give US or India address.

As a first step, I will wait for your feedback. Take your time for replying - but reply before 9th of July End of the day IST.
Based on your feedback, I shall determine the feasibility. As days go by I shall keep you updated.

Approximate date for camp activity will be July 21st or 22nd or 28th or 29th.

Thank you

Your sincerely
Tamil Selvan

Be Hungry for facts and information!

Be Hungry and Stay Hungry - not for Pizza, but for Facts!!!

As food is for stomach, facts and information is for our brain.
Be really hungry for the facts.

Listen to information and news audio channels or televisions or read the informative websites. Do not just waste time in only the movie related informative media.

These days, news comes in various ways. Unfortunately majority of our indian media concentrates on the movies and movie related programmes. This is terrible, in terms of culture and growth of the country.

If you are in United States, try listening to NPR news, BBC or CNN! They are awesome. The advantage with "National Public Radio" is - it comes in any city! Another thing is they don't have any commercial in between the programmes. All things are considered! They are awesome in bringing information to the consumers.

I am sure similar stuff is in india as well - like CNN IBN, NDTV etc., Do not just watch the movie based channels. Let us get out of the closet and explore the world.

Feed the mind with lot of facts, automatically there will be lot of processing inside our brains to produce very productive thoughts.

Be Hungry and Stay Hungry - not for Pizza, but for Facts!!!
