Madurai Central Library to improve and change for hi-tech

The profile of library network in Madurai district is set to change in about a month’s time. Giving lead to this image makeover is the District Central Library in the city which is now giving shape to various Information Technology (IT) initiatives. 
It will no more be just an array of racks, shelves, books and a reading table. The District Central Library, which has a collection of 1.56 lakh books, will provide a range of value-added services, the infrastructure for which is getting ready. 
Internet browsing centre, downloads, book scanning, printouts, CD writing, an exclusive webpage, bar coding of books and CCTV are among the things in pipeline. 
Not only the central library in Madurai but also the 12 taluk libraries in the district at places such as Melur, Usilampatti, Sholavandan, Tirupparankundram and Tirunagar are being supplied with computers, thanks to support from Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation, an autonomous body under the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development. 
“IT has penetrated into every field and so libraries cannot be an exception. Each branch library is getting three computers and already the taluk level libraries are provided with photocopiers,” says M. Kannan, Librarian, Subramaniapuram Branch Library. 
According to R. Sakthivel, Librarian in-charge, District Central Library, the infrastructure development and IT installations were made possible due to a special fund of Rs.4.09 lakh sanctioned by former Collector T. Udhayachandran. 
“On an average, there will be 750 visitors a day at the central library which was opened in 1952. Out of the total collection of 1.56 lakh books, one lakh books are meant for lending and the remaining 56,000 are reference books,” he says. OPAC soon 
For the benefit of people outside Madurai district who want to know the details of books in the District Central Library, a webpage is being created with the help of National Informatics Centre (NIC). “In library parlance, we call the webpage facility as Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) through which public can access the library catalogue,”says Mr. Kannan. Librarians were trained in operating computers at a programme held here last month. 
The annual subscription for library membership is Rs.10. Besides, Rs.50 has to be paid as caution deposit for three tokens and the books are lent for 14 days. 
Browsing charges per hour will be Rs.10. Talks are under way with the BSNL to get broadband connectivity. “The value-added services will prove that public libraries can be revenue-earners too by collecting nominal charges.” 
The District Central Library is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and it has a separate section for women and children. Library authorities put forth a request to the State Government to appoint qualified full-time/pay scale staff because “the central library and branch libraries cannot afford to have temporary staff since it is risky when you are dealing with valuable books.”

One of my lifetime Madurai Dreams - Madurai Chain of Libraries

One of my lifetime Madurai Dreams

I have always like the concept of Library in my childhood.
My mother used to work as a librarian in my school, apart from being a clerk cum typist in the same school.

Even though I don't really have looked into the books very curiously, my mother used to bring books on rent to home for reading. She gives me newspapers for reading, so that I and my brothers would get reading habit. She really understood the concept of reading and its associated advantages. She tried a lot with us.

My uncle(my mother's brother) works as a clerk in Madurai Kamaraj University as well. He gets us books from the MKU library for rent. We had so much advantange and access to the libraries in the town.

The libraries, any student would get access to in Madurai town are - School library, College Library, University Library, Street library(if one exists) and the City Government Library.

However, when a student wants entertainment, he/she does not go to a library to spend/kill time. Cinema theaters are the main destination, even if it is a daytime or afternoon times.

I think there has to be an option for somebody to spend time in a local library in every area. That is my dream. Anybody should love reading. Reading a book, apart from academic books had been an alien idea for someone.

I am setting a budget starting in 2005 from my personal money to build a network of libraries in and around Madurai. Anybody wants to read or gain knowledge or kill time or spend time usefully or pass free time or entertain themselves or have meeting and discuss about knowledgeable topics - then they should think about this chain of libraries. Libraries should facilitate a great childhood in Madurai to win the world!!

I am talking, representing New Madurai Foundation. I don't know which year I would be able to build this network of libraries, but definitely I will before I die! That is too far anyway.

This is one of my dreams - Building a Network of Libraries in and around Madurai.

Minutes of the First Free Library Launch in South Madurai

First Free Library was launched in South Madurai on January 2006. Here is the Highlights of the Free Library Launch ----

Mani Maran, Angu Ashok Kumar, Murali Kandan, Surya Selvan and Tamil Selvan were the ones worked hard for the "New Madurai Foundation" legal registration and free library launch.

"New Madurai Foundation" By-Law was completed before 25th of December '05.
By-Law was submitted for review and registration by 29th of December '05.

It was reviewed by Lawyer and it was approved by concerned people.
We - Tamil Selvan, Mani Maran, Surya and Ashok went to the registration office and we registered with the appropriate registration fees less than Rs.1000.

That completes the registration minutes.

For Library - everything was set.

Books were purchased using our personal money from the second hand shops and also books were collected from close relatives. Some of the notable people donated their books are - Tamil Selvan, Ramya Maran, Mani Maran, Surya Selvan, Dr.Santhana Kannan, Ramdoss, Mrs.Kamalam Shankar etc., All the books were of so much money which were purchased from the beginning of our career individually.
Book Racks which are made of steel were purchased from the furniture shops and sandhai. It was around Rs.3250.
Sweets, Karam and Coffee was prepared and bought from outside using our personal money. Bills are all filed up with the Financial Trustee - Mani Maran.
Decoration items and wall posters were purchased from decoration shops and ideal home exhibition in Madurai.
Reading Table was ordered from a furniture production shop. It costs around Rs.2000.
Stools were purchased from furniture shop. Bills are available with Mani Maran.
Water can is provided by Mani Maran temporariliy.
Space for library is provided by Tamil Selvan temporarily.
Ashok has given all his time and efforts and helped Mani Maran to make this project successful.
Overall it is a great team effort and we are very much glad that we did it.
We hope the list of book donors will grow.
We invited couple of teachers, relatives, new madurai volunteers and friends. Only Siva Bond, Ashok, Mani, Surya Selvan and Tamil Selvan came for the function, from New Madurai Foundation volunteer list.

TVS Lakshmi Mat. Hr. Sec. School Principal Mr. Sudhakar was invited for the function to preside as Chief Guest. He cut the ribbon and inaugurated the library.

Guests and audience were sitting in the chairs. Tamil Selvan and Sudhakar sat in front of the audience. Rest of the Trustees were standing in the side.

Tamil Selvan gave a brief about New Madurai Foundation. Chief Guest spoke about the good deed we were starting to work on. Surya Selvan, a trustee presented the memento to the chief guest. Akshaya Krishnan was given a chance to tell about his work. Mani Maran, financial trustee gave the cheque to Krishnan, for december month.

There was a question session and there was snacks and coffee section.

June 2006 Monthly Newsletter - New Madurai Foundation

Dear all,
It is been quite a while, since we have published our newsletter, which explains quite a bit about our status and what we are planning to do!

Management Words:
As you all know, we started off nicely in the beginning of the year by - (i) Registration of New Madurai Foundation legally (ii) Proceeding on "Helping Akshaya" project (iii) Launch of the first free library in South Madurai. This newsletter will explain about the status and the plan going forward.

We are very glad to share some of the updates happenning as of now. For the past two or three months, there was not much interaction on the group as such!

We have decided to expedite our activities in a gradual manner on New Madurai Foundation projects. This won't be a drastic shift, but it would be gradual. We are going to call for more help from you. More and more people need to come forward, then only we can achieve what we want to do! It is definitely not a single man's work. Everybody need to come forward for helping us complete our projects. We have only two projects currently, so it is definitely easier for us to achieve the target.

Current Community Strength:
A good thing about New Madurai Group is - currently the strength is 134! This strength was gained in a time span of around 1 year, including some silence among the group for quite a while. This is in fact, without much campaign efforts.

There are some MSW(Masters in Social Work - in American College) students also joining the team. We would be glad if they step up to help us in what we are doing. We will do all kinds of help, if they step up to help in any of the projects.

Marketing and New Networking Updates:
We have not done enough marketing, but there are new networking contacts coming up by themselves.
(i) Mr.Bruno Winck and Ms.Sylvie Winck from US/France were interested in our library and they wanted to give some help. Mr.Winck came down to New Madurai Foundation and evaluated our library to update Ms.Sylvie, who is a Librarian and she had built libraries in many places from different parts of the world. Mr. Winck gave a huge list of comments, but we have not got back to them yet. We will get back to them and work together as soon as possible, I guess.

(ii) Mrs.Ibrahim from US wanted to help us in someway, but she is still understanding on what we are doing.

Project Updates:
First Free Library Project Updates:
We have the library running and there are few visitors coming and using the facility. But it is definitely not going great, because of the poor marketing. This is because of lack of funds and lack of resources to proceed. If anyone would like to come forward for spending time on spreading the news, that would be highly appreciated.

"Helping Akshaya" Project Updates:
We were on target for collection of Rs.2500 and handing it over to Akshaya Krishnan! But we were not able to meet the target for 3 months or so! We are going to make it a point from now on to get Rs.2500 collected! Any help on this will be appreciated!

Need Resouces for:
(i) Madan lal, who is already a New Madurai Member is working on (campaign and proposal) documentation.
(ii) Need some one from Madurai - who will get a cheque from our New Madurai Foundation, Alagappan Nagar to Akshaya Krishnan, Doak Nagar in Madurai. And then get the receipt and hand over it to New Madurai Foundation. Please contact us, if you can help us!?
(iii) Need everyone to spread the news.
(iv) Our important project officer had to proceed with some other activites and wanted to break for sometime. This is a planned break and he will definitely come back sometime, after he settles down. This is a big loss for us!

FREE Library in Madurai for the first time!

This is the first time a private party had opened a library in Madurai, and that too for FREE. This was one of the New Madurai Foundation projects, sponsored by Made In Madurai.

Kendriya Vidyalaya Madurai School Online Library

Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV), Narimedu has become the first school in Madurai to operate a full-fledged online library, catering to the needs of thousands of students. Over the last one year, the number of visitors to the site (http://kv1madurailibrary.wordpress.com) has grown at a rapid pace to about 1.3 lakh. Most of the visitors accessed resource materials, e-books, reference material and other syllabi with the help of this library.

Library employees Librarian Selection test in Madurai for Chennai Digital Library

On Aug 28th and 29th 2010, Selection Tests are being conducted for Librarians and other employees of Digital Library to be setup soon in Chennai very soon.

This is being conducted in Ee, Ve, Ra school and around 700-800 people are writing this exam.

Reading habit for kids

Reading habit for kids

I believe - If we implant the reading habit in kids, then their life is set.
As Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam had said sometime back - Good Reading leads to good thoughts; thoughts leads to actions; actions lead to habit and habit leads to character. The whole good character could be built by a reading habit.

My mother always brought books from the local library and had advocated us to read in my school days. I realized the power of reading habit only in my college days, in fact. I want my children to have them incorporated as early as possible, like my mother dreamt about us.

First of all, we need to be a good model character for them. We should not be the person who just watches movies and TV whole time. The children should see us reading magazines and good books. They will automatically follow us, because they don't have anybody to follow in the initial stages. I am sure once they read more books they will form their own characters by following great men.

Take them to the library, when they are just 1 or 1.5 year old itself. Or 2 years is a good enough age, when they understand things better. They will see all the people reading silently and assume that it is a good habit to do and they start liking too.

Do not push the reading and as always let reading be FUN for them!

As my parents invested on education for us, and nothing else, I will take my children's education as a high priority.
If we are keen in just earning and building wealth, it is not good enough. We need to invest time on kids to encourage them and appreciate them, recognize them for their work and their thinking.

Use Recognition...recognition as the Carrots for their improvement and their happiness!

New Madurai - Future Projects

New Madurai Future Projects:
One of our main current projects is – Free Library Network project in and around Madurai. This is a huge project and we have launched our first library in January 2006.

All of our projects fall under two categories. One is Helping Under-privileged Madurai and another is helping average Madurai to excel. Please find our current and future projects listed below.

Literate Madurai Project:
I believe one person is considered as literate, if he/she is able to read/write Tamil. In addition to this if he/she is able to read/write English too, that is great. We will work towards only the first point. Madurai current literacy rate is 79%. While moving towards perfection, we will have to make it 100% literacy. More awareness we have, more we can achieve. As it is universally known, Knowledge is Power. Whenever we think of improving a city, I think first thing we should do is increase the literacy rate. As a next step, increase the number of successful entrepreneurs. That apart, in order to work out 100% literacy rate, we will have to identify, whom we will have to target. The target segments of people for beneficiary are children, youth, men women, senior citizens.

I personally know one of my relatives, who have sent two sons to work, terminating their school studies, while they were performing well in studies.

I would start thinking from why would a parent not send a child to school or why a child would not be interested in coming to school.1) Ignorance - Many parents are not aware of the importance of education for children and a reading habit of a child.2) Less Motivation - Due to the ignorance, they feel “what is the use of the education?!”. Parents and children are less motivated about education.3) Poverty - Since there is not much to feed all of the family members, it is a compulsion to create more earning hands to feed all the mouths. So children are sent to work.There might be much more, but let us restrict with these points for our focus.
In addition to the children and youth, we will have to educate the adults too, for more awareness, so that we can move forward together.

Educating Women is the most important part in this project. For every society, every woman’s education is very important. If we educate a woman, we educate a family.

Clean and Green Madurai Project:
Though there are lot of measures by the corporation for cleanliness, we can still see places in Madurai as not neat. In order for us to make, Madurai as a best tourist destination, first of all it has to be neat. It also gives a good feel for us to live in the neat place. Singapore was not a great country until an initiative was taken.
This project is getting student power and youth to clean up.

Healthy Madurai Project:
For every person, health is the prime thing anybody should take care of. There are lot of people in Madurai, who are inaccessible to even basic medical facilities. This project is to give at least the basic facility. Though, there is “Rajaji government hospital” and other primary health centers, there is a need for more hospitals like Aravind Hospital – Free hospital section. It is amazing that somebody gives free medical care and surgery. As a project under “Made in Madurai”, we would like to open couple of hospitals in and around Madurai, for free section of these private hospitals. In addition to the free private hospital sections, there will be health camps in all the schools, colleges and villages in and around Madurai.

Industrial Madurai Project:
You could see more details in http://www.madeinmadurai.com/. More and more entrepreneurs have to be created and appreciated for Madurai. As a project under – “Made in Madurai”, couple of Entrepreneurial development centers has to be opened to help the people of Madurai for jobs and business consultancy.

Calling Madurai Project:
This project is basically similar to “Pravasi Divas” of our India. Basically bringing many NRIs and other NRMs to Madurai for investment and improving Madurai. New Madurai will be a liason between the administrative officers who could do presentation about Madurai to the NRIs for any investment they could think of. Basically we need to arrange and organize a meeting and high tea between these two parties for interests in Madurai. We need to contact MADITSSIA(Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association), CII(Confederation of Indian Industry) and all registered clubs like Rotract etc., for this to frucitify. This is just a gist, but lot of things to do on this. We need to have newmadurai.org to be really popular among the online community, so that it reaches the appropriate persons. For now we can do some ground works like - bringing together an online community in newmadurai.org.

E-Governance Project:
All the governance, administrative and people services has to be made e-enabled. Everything should be accessible from web and anywhere from the world for ease of people. Take for example, Chandrababu Naidu from Hyderabad, he had outsourced his government’s web administrative and people services – “eSeva” in web, to couple of private software organizations. Say – Electricity bills, tax services, phone bill services etc.,

Zero-Corruption Project:
The details of the project will be documented in the requirements and project plan document.

100% Employed Madurai Project:
As a part of “Made in Madurai”, we will be opening job consultancies in and around Madurai for helping students, job-seekers for getting jobs. This effort is for connecting the employers and potential employees in Madurai.

Population Controlled Madurai Project:
Population reduction campaigns will be created as an effort for this project.

Organized Traffic Madurai Project:
Better road design and strict traffic/parking measures and rules have to be initiated and controlled accordingly.

NO to AIDS Madurai Project:
AIDS campaign and adult education is necessary in Madurai. This project will deal with the same.

NO to Hunger Project:
This is part of helping under-privileged Madurai of New Madurai. Every man and woman should get 3 times food and this is towards poverty alleviation.

Tourist Destination Madurai Project:
Various marketing and tourism coordination efforts have to be initiated. As a part of “Made in Madurai” project, there will be a tourism agent opened in Madurai for attracting more tourists.

Zero Crime Madurai Project:
This will be one of the efforts to help the police department of Madurai for reducing crime rate. More and more rowdies are cropping up in Madurai, which has to be reduced. Better explanation can be found in the requirements and project plan documents of this project.

Righteous Path Madurai Project:
There are various balances, every man has to be make – mental, physical, career-personal life and at last spiritual balance. Nobles ideas and thoughts has to be sowed in youth and children’s mind.

International Infrastructure Madurai Project:
For many businesses to smoothly function, international infrastructure has to be built.

Helping Under-privileged Madurai Project:
This project is for helping the destitute and very poor – below poverty people of Madurai for upliftment.

We believe these are the core problems Madurai has and we are dreaming and planning to correct the same. We have thought through this much only right now. If we get more thoughts, we will add up projects as and when needed.

America Days in Madurai - American College and Gandhi Museum

Madurai, Sept 27 (PTI)

The U.S.Consulate General, Chennai, organized a four-day programme "America Days", showcasing its cultural and educational resources, at the American College (AC) and the Gandhi Museum here from tomorrow. The event, organized for the first time out side the state capital, gave an insight into the U.S Consulate's cultural and educational resources, including those of the American Library and the US-India Education foundation (USIEF). The AC hosted the majority of the events on its campus including:creative teaching / learning workshops for teachers and teacher educators; English Language teaching workshops; Higher education in the United States and student visas, and daily screening of Oscar award-winning American films. The programme also featured photo exhibitions, quiz contests, poetry and speech competitions for school and university students, US Consul General Andrew T.Simkin told newsmen here today. To begin America Days, Simkin presented "Journeys Toward Freedom," a photo exhibit about Mahatma Gandhi and Rev.Martin Luther King Jr at the Gandhi Memorial Museum tomorrow. Mahalingam, Chairman of the museum, received the exhibit in the presence of District Collector C.Kamaraj. The U.S. Consul General formally inaugurated America Days in the evening at the American College Auditorium. Dr.T Chinnaraj Joseph Jaikumar, Principal of the college, presided over the function.

MK Azhagiri's ambition statement to a TV

Gandhi Museum - Madurai Tourism

The Gandhi Museum of Madurai was established in the loving memory of the Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation. It holds great historical importance and was set up by the Gandhi Memorial Trust after the assassination of Bapu in 1948. The museum has been set up in the Palace of Rani Mangammal of Nayak Dynasty. It was also at one point occupied by the Nawabs- the muslim rulers. The palace was donated by the Tamil Nadu Government to the trust in 1955, to commemorate the contribution of Gandhi to India. Madurai was one among the seven locations in India that were chosen by the Gandhi Memorial Trust to set up a Museum.

A little known fact: It was in Madurai, during his visit in 1921, that Gandhiji decided to give up his normal dressing style, and took to the dhoti. Also, Gandhiji visited the Meenakshi Temple in 1946. Following this, Harijans were let allowed to enter the temple for the first time.

Inside the museum premises, The picture Gallery presents a visual biography of Gandhiji. India’s Freedom Struggle is illustrated in an exhibition at the entry to the museum. There are many handicrafts donated by the states of Tamilnadu, Mysore, Andhra and Kerala. Gandhiji’s photos, quotations, paintings etc are also on display in this museum. Many of his letters are photocopied and exhibited here. ”The Hall of Relics” within the museum displays some of Gandhiji’s personal belongings. Some of these are original and some are replica. There is a section of Khadi and Village Industries on the ground floor of the museum which exhibits some of the Village industries Gandhiji revived. There is an open-air theatre which can accommodate about 8000 people. Public meetings, weekly film shows and many cultural programmes are held in this theatre. There are even Yoga and Naturopathy classes conducted here. The Gandhi Museum is an institution by itself. The there is “Gandhi Kutir”, a replica of Gandhiji’s hut in Sevagram. There is a large library which houses books by Gandhiji among other literature.

Timings: 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. 2.00 p.m. to 5.45 p.m. Open on all days.

Dhaya Engineering College Approval Pending Petition Filed 2011 to 2012

M K Alagiri Trust has submitted a petition that the All India Council for Technical Education had given permission to begin admissions from 2011-12 after due inspection by an expert team on May 18., but approval for admitting students for the coming year is still pending.

An AUT team pointed out three defects during the inspection on July 22 which included shortage of 175 books in a library, location of a cafeteria near class room and non-availability of transport. The defects which were "trivial" in nature were pointed out with ulterior motive to defer the college's request, it said adding yet the college had rectified them.

However, there seems to be delay in giving permission to admit students for 2011 t0 2012 academic year. The petition alleges that government authorities were intentionally refusing permission for the college because Alagiri Union Minister Chemicals and Fertilizers, a senior DMK leader, was one of the trustees.

Victoria Albert Hall - madurai tourism

Sourashtrians – a community of weavers came to Madurai from Gujarat in search of their fortunes. They continued to live in Madurai, thankful to the stable rule of the Nayak dynasty. They lived in harmony & adapted to the Tamilian culture quickly. Known as pattu-nool-karer (silk thread people) they bought the art of weaving to Madurai.

Much of their raw material was obtained from Madura Mills & they were good terms with the officials of the Mill & they wished to express their gratitude. In 1910’s a town hall (Victoria Albert Hall) was constructed. This was a blend of Gothic, Victorian & Portuguese style of architecture. It was originally meant to show plays, English movies etc. The first film screened here was Victoria the Great. Soon the officials realized that even if the British, Americans & Anglo-Indians enjoyed films here, it was not economically viable.

Hence the Sourashtrians took the land on lease. They still screened films – but skipped the matinee shows. In the afternoon, the Hall was used as a library. Regal Talkies as it was now called had stood the test of time. It has now come a long way from the time that that a movie only cost a quarter of a rupee. Its new avatar is a low-brow movie house for the local population.
