Pre-marital sex is on the rise with our Tamil Nadu culture - my personal opinion

As I have been travelling all around Chennai, Madurai, Trichy etc., in comparison with my time of youth, I am surprised to see a lot of pre-marital affairs, relationship and sex in today's youths.

In my time (that is more than 10 years back) in my college days, there would be a very less percentage of folks who might have been involved in any sexual activity among my classmates, before marriage. But, it is has become very common these days in today's youth.

Why is that case? I would say here are some reasons I understand - more money in hand for youths, more freedom of youth, more exposure to entertainment and media - internet, atomic families, culture in-tact is missing, both parents working and no time to take care of their kids, unbalanced youths and seeking for a partner before marriage and at last trying to copy the culture of west!

I would not say it is good or bad, but here is my observation and this is where we are going towards.

Madurai Man gets Bravery Award from Australian government

Madurai is famous for bravery in many angles and here is a sample of someone from Madurai an NRI getting a bravery award from Australian Government...

A stores supervisor from Madurai is among five Indians who have received bravery awards from the Australian government for their heroic rescue of around 25 injured soldiers from a blast site following a terror attack at Al Kasik in Iraq on August 4, 2008.

For Nagaraj Muthu Kamatchi, 32, presently employed in Nigeria, living on the edge in dangerous places is a way of life.

Along with seven other Indians, all employed in the catering division of the UN army, Mr Nagaraj has worked in cities like Baghdad, Tikrit, Al Kasik and even Karbala.

Sandeep Sherigar from Maharashtra, also a recipient of the Australian bravery award and a colleague of Mr Nagaraj, said that the two, along with Deepak Arondekar from Goa, had gone to the dining hall to have their lunch when a huge blast rocked their building.

“It was around 1.30 pm when we went to the dining hall where around 25 to 30 Australian soldiers were dining. The noise was deafening and there was blood all over the place,” Mr Sandeep said.

“Before we could panic, our head supervisor, Chris Hardley, rushed to help the victims and all four of us joined him,” Mr Sandeep added.

For the next few hours, the four men who had gone to provide civilian assistance were covered in the blood of the injured soldiers. “We did our best to carry whoever we could to a safer place,” said Mr Arondekar.

“I am glad that the Aust-ralian government has remembered us and honoured us with this recognition.”

Back home in Madurai, Mr Nagaraj’s proud mother Bhanumathy recalled her son’s passion for joining a catering course over electronics.

“He was passionate about the profession and that has helped him save many lives when he was working in Iraq,” she said.

Commending the bravery of Mr Nagaraj, the Australian government, in its citation said: “Despite the potential for further terrorist attack following the blasts, Mr Muthu Kamatchi, an untrained civilian, placed his own safety at risk by combing through the wreckage for his critically injured and dying friends and colleagues.

Individually, and with the support of other civilians, Mr Muthu Kamatchi helped move seriously wounded people onto functioning vehicles, and transported them to hospital.

Searching for ways to make money - even illegal ways! - Madurai Culture

Searching for ways to make money - even illegal ways! - Madurai Culture

There are n number of ways to make money in this world.
However, few of our maduraiites choose illegal ways.

Money by force, money by cheating...

Money by cheating:
Being genuine is a good karma. If you give someone you know with some 1000s of rupees and tell him/her that you will get it back after 1 year. There is only 50% probability that you might get it back. The other party might give n number
of reasons to avoid you and say that he will give the money later.

There are some horror stories of illegal acquisition of lands and houses for
rent, which comes under both the categories - money by force and money by
cheating.

Another example of money by cheating - In temples like Meenakshi Amman Temple,
there is cheating and corruption. When a ticket counter fellow issues you a
ticket, that same ticket is torn into two pieces and given back to you, as a
receipt. Lately, the ticket is not torn or other half of the ticket is not
issued back to the temple visitor. Instead the same ticket is sold again and
again. Can you imagine, what all ways you get to know for making money?

Money by force:
Kandhu vatti, Meter Vatti, Rocket Vatti, Katta panchayath? Have you heard these terminologies? Thesea are all popular terms among Madurai folks. You can hear stories like - you give the house for rent and you come back to the tenant and tell them to vacate the house in 1 month. The tenant would say I can leave the house only after 1 year. This happens only in India and places like Madurai. Money by force and money by cheating...

Why is all these happenning? Poverty? Illiteracy? Great Rich and Poor Divide?
God knows...these are the discussions, everyone gets into easily and end up no
where.

Last but not least -
In SpiderMan movie, the hero is advised by his uncle that - "With Great Power
comes Great Responsibility"
, but you know how does Madurai folks perceive it?

"With Great Power comes Corruption and with Great Power comes Cheating Money"!!

Madurai Taekwondo - a martial art - Korean Karate - CK Nagaraj

In my school days, my mother enrolled me and my Madurai brother into two courses. As I have told you before, my mother had a vision. She wants her children to be well equipped before we encounter the real world.

One was Hindi class provided by Dakshin Bharath Hindi Prachar Sabha and I successfully passed "Praveen" exam. This is supposed to be equivalent to BA in Hindi.

Another was Taekwondo. My brother completed Taekwondo - Black Belt. I completed the Brown Belt, which is just before Black Belt.

We used to study in the TVS Nagar branch, which was opposite TVS Lakshmi Matric School. Taekwondo is a great martial art, but from Korea. Taekwondo is more of an art with the leg, when compared to Karate, which is all of hands. Taekwondo is more of leg and less of hand. Taekwondo is also called Korean Karate. Taekwondo is one of the asian(korean) martial art, like Kung fu and Karate.

CK Nagaraj was our master and he is a great teacher and a great person. He is a good friend of us and our mother knows him very well. I am grateful to the Taekwondo master Nagaraj. He is a member of Lions Club as well. CK Nagaraj had received even 3-5 DANs(levels) in Black Belt of Karate.

One interesting point is - TVS Nagar branch still exists and even today master is teaching in the same terrace of the building opposite our school.

By the way, 24th January and 25th, 26th - state level competition is planned to happen in TVS Lakshmi Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Madurai.

I am grateful to this master CK Nagaraj. As a return gift, I am posting this article dedicated to Mr.Nagaraj, Taekwondo Black Belt in Madurai.

For further details - please contact -
Channa K. Nagaraj, C 249, VII Stop, Kamarajar Street, Tirunagar, Madurai-625 006. Mobile:9843052449.

For you reference - an article by "The Hindu" about Taekwondo in Madurai recently.

Madurai Tea shop - a speciality beverage in Madurai

Earlier, I have written about Madurai Tea shops - click here to read, but please come back to this article.

Madurai Tea shops are special. You want to know the reasons, here are they -

* 365/24/7 you can get tea.
* tea with a combination of murukku anytime. But in special times like evenings, you get bajji, vada etc.,
* You are treated royal, if you are decent enough in dressing.
* 1/2 tea can be ordered. that means one tea can be shared in two glass tumblers by two individuals.
* Tea is served in glass tumblers with 3/4'ths filled with tea. Smoke is also sold anytime, even one-by-one. - 'Bossu cigarette saapteengalaa bossu?' - 'bossu neenga cigarette saappudra palakkam irukkaa?'
* A friendship is shared with a tea. - 'Bossu teaa saappudunga bossuu'.
* A conversation is started with a tea.
* A Thanks is conveyed with a tea.
* On an average, men drink like 3-5 teas in a day, when they go out.
* 'paal-tea' can be ordered - which has more milk in it. that is why it is called paal-tea.
* Any corner street or main town place you go, you can get tea.
* The number of tea shops in Madurai is infinite.
* you also get other beverages - coffee, horlicks, bournvita...
* Even in hot sun and middle of the noon - madurai folks would be drinking tea, instead they should be drinking cool drinks.
* A tea used to cost Re.1 and 50 paise. But today, it costs Rs.2, 50 paise and Rs.3.

Madurai Tea shop is Madurai's Starbucks coffee place, as in US.

What if I have to setup a tea shop and consider it as one of my businesses?? Yes, it is possible. There are two ways - either setup a roadside shop or setup an upscale one like Coffee Day or any Coffee Bar etc., as my friend used to like Visalam Coffee Bar - I have never been there...

It is a real good business to setup a tea or coffee shop in Madurai. It will turn out to be a good profitable business...Think about it!!

Dependant or Inter-dependant Society: Madurai

This article is a follow-up to an article I wrote about a budding entrepreneur. Here is the previous post. Please read the previous post and then read the following...

Today, I called this Mr.X(Name hidden for privacy) and came to know that there is lot of family pressure, against his business ideas and entrepreneurship and risk-taking-attitude. His father-in-law and brother-in-law are opposing for his venture, instead they are expecting him to go for a job.

There is no independence for this guy! What is this? It is his life! He, his wife and his son is a family. How can somebody else interfere in his life? well...hold on... This is Madurai...Madurai is an inter-dependent and dependent society. This is not west, I understand that...However - there is too much control on one's life.

Why should this guy listen to his in-laws? I guess, that is how it is! In fact, in-laws will help, if there is a need and no one would come forward...

In today's modern culture, there is no joint family culture, however there is a virtual joint family culture still existing in Madurai. Even though physically members of the family don't stay together in a same house, still they are together virtually atleast in decisions and for happiness or sadness.

This inter-dependency definitely does not help at all for entrepreneurship!! Hope this changes/improves.

My Madurai Mother - part II

I have written about my mother in one of the earlier posts. Here is the post, click here

My mother was born to Parvathathammal and Sellaiyapillai. Parvathathammal even sold idly and paniayaram in streets for their daily expenditure and to bring up her children. My mother's mother was a very hard working person, hence I guess my mother also became a hard working person. It all depends on parents only for how the children would be.

Three days back, my mother had a eye surgery for cataract. One good thing in Madurai is - Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai. Operation was successful and Aravind Hospital is doing great!

One unfortunate thing is - I and my wife are not there to help my mother, when she needs us. She had been there for us, when we needed and today we are not there to help her. However, my eldest brother who is Doctor is there to help my mother.

In my childhood days, when my mother is out to office or any relative's function, we would wait for her and we(brothers) miss her a lot. We would wait and watch the door for my mother to come back.

She would bring Masal Kadalai from the corner shop. I like those masaal kadalais very much. I used to fill the masal kadalai into my trouser pocket or shirt pocket and slowly eat.

Anyway, even though I am far away from you my mother - I am always thinking about you and I will come to you soon for helping you.

My mother series will continue...

Jaathagam in Madurai: Moola Nakshathram

My wife's friend who lives in Madurai - is now of age 34 and she is not getting married due to some societal reasons. Do you know what is the reason?

Jaathagam - paazhaappona jaathagam. Looks like she has Moola Natchathiram. Moola Natchathiram is one kind of star, and it seems that not a great star.

If you have moola nathcathiram(moola star or moola Nakshthram), then there are so many restrictions for marriage. Moola star is not compatible with any star person, it seems. If you marry a moola star person, then your father would die - this is what astrologers say! Isn't it crazy?!

That is the reason, our friend is not getting any alliance for her marriage!!! It is like Tamil Comedy Actor Vivek says - "Aayiram periyaargall vandhaalum, ungallai thirutha mudiyaathu"!!!

Madurai Culture Analysis : Working women or housewife is good?

In today's expensive lifestyle, it is very difficult to live, save and prosper into a wealthy family just by one income. Life demands for both husband and wife to earn, spend and save.

When I was looking for my wife(arranged marriage), I had this debate inside myself for whether I have to choose working woman or a housewife. May be this analysis would help anybody in the same boat.

Let us analyze what are the advantages and disadvantages of a housewife for a family.

Advantages of working women over housewives.
1) More money into the family finance.
2) Busy mind, is productive. Idle mind is devil's workshop
3) Career for both husband and wife is in good shape.
4) If there is an emergency or worst cases, woman member of the family should be able to take over and balance the financial stability in the family.
5) Whole family is productive, in terms of work.

Advantages of housewife over working woman:
1) If one person is working outside and another is taking care of the family. That is the best thing for the family. All the households are taken care.
2) Kids are well taken care. Ask any working woman about their kids - they would feel bad and guilty for not taking care of them to the full extent - whatever age it is.
3) Happy family, with whatever money is available.
4) Relations are maintained.
5) Provided the family lives economically(of whatever income), a happy family.

Disclaimer: Please note these are my personal views and not intended to hurt anyone.

You wanted to know - what I chose?
At last, I was lucky(arranged marriage) to get a mix of both of them. May be that is the best option for anyone. Opinions differ...

Madurai Entertainment - Madurai Movies/ Madurai Cinema

Madurai Entertainment - Madurai Movies/ Madurai Cinema

There are lot of movies which has come out with stories based on Madurai lately and in very large quantity recently. All the village subjects are shot in Madurai and the story is based on places like Madurai, Theni, Kambam, Sivagangai, Periyakulam, Dindigul etc., For some reason, tamils(tamils from tamilnadu) all over the world have an idea that Madurai and its suburban people are all hard, rough, uneducated, aggressive, angry, sentimental and illiterate people.

That sounds to be interesting for audience these days. Taking advantage of the fact that people are interested to watch madurai based stories, there are more movies coming out these days.

In olden days, there was an MGR cast movie called Madurai Veeran. Good!
Now, starting with Kadal, Madurey, Madurai Veeran, Vel, Paruthi Veeran, Thimiru, Thavamai Thavamirundhu etc.,

All are huge hits, due to the audience traction to madurai, story, action etc.,
All the village folks songs based on Madurai are huge hits too.

In short, Madurai is hugely seen with its rustic outlook and not with a refined outlook. Will it look good with its refined and non-rustic face. I believe, as change happens, it will look good!!

Is building an orphange Good practice or bad?

Traditionally in India, orphans were accommodated by the extended family. But in western part of the world people built orphanages. The characteristics of orphanages for the last two hundred years have been: • insufficient numbers of staff to meet the physical and psychological needs of the children; • a failure to teach the children how to relate to adults of both sexes, and in doing so learn how to be a woman or a man; • a failure to teach them how to build relationships of their own; • lack of planning of the children’s’ work futures. In Europe, girl babies are put into orphanages, grow up without relationships with boys and men, come out at sixteen, get pregnant . . . and put their girl baby back into the orphanage.

People seem to love building orphanages. The idea makes a nice mental picture – the saintly founders, surrounded by the loving children who are only alive because of them, all in a building that is a concrete proof of their benevolence. But this picture is about the egos of the builders, not what is best for children.

Today, AIDS has brought a large number of orphans. How should they be cared for? The money that can build an orphanage can also be spent on fostering the babies with their grannies and paying an allowance. If there are no grannies, aunties or big sisters, they can be fostered with non-related families. If land tenure is closed to outsiders, then older orphans will do better in towns, where they can be found a Master or Mistress and apprenticed to a trade, and ideally fostered with the Mistress’s or Master’s family.

Be Hungry for facts and information!

Be Hungry and Stay Hungry - not for Pizza, but for Facts!!!

As food is for stomach, facts and information is for our brain.
Be really hungry for the facts.

Listen to information and news audio channels or televisions or read the informative websites. Do not just waste time in only the movie related informative media.

These days, news comes in various ways. Unfortunately majority of our indian media concentrates on the movies and movie related programmes. This is terrible, in terms of culture and growth of the country.

If you are in United States, try listening to NPR news, BBC or CNN! They are awesome. The advantage with "National Public Radio" is - it comes in any city! Another thing is they don't have any commercial in between the programmes. All things are considered! They are awesome in bringing information to the consumers.

I am sure similar stuff is in india as well - like CNN IBN, NDTV etc., Do not just watch the movie based channels. Let us get out of the closet and explore the world.

Feed the mind with lot of facts, automatically there will be lot of processing inside our brains to produce very productive thoughts.

Be Hungry and Stay Hungry - not for Pizza, but for Facts!!!

Dreaming Madurai into the roads of Singapore!

Dreaming Madurai into the roads of Singapore!

Is it possible? You will see the answer, as you read on.
I remember and you all will remember one of the politicians coined the same statement and became an utter failure in his political career. Well, anything can happen. He can become a CM someday to the state, considering his education and intelligence. That apart, let us get into the topic.

Again, is it possible? Yes!! 200% it is possible! Anything is possible in this world, just be good planning, execution, team work and hard work.

Here is the japanese way of solving problems. We list out the problems, identify various solutions. Analyze on which solution is best and choose the solution. Once the solution is chosen, just execute it carefully. This is definitely not possible by just one person's thoughts and one person's action. It involves lot of people.

Everyone should come together on this. Many good leaders has to be cultivated. Many new leaders has to be born. Need to work together to execute.

Work hard towards our goals and one single main goal - of Making Madurai a New Madurai!

There has to be a gradual and sharp change in everyone of us. We have to become the
change and show the world that we have changed. Once the world understands and realizes that it is a productive community, automatically funds and investments will pour in.

Atleast, if we are not able to produce, we should provide a cozy environment or platform for production. Are we ready to do that?

Good things can be done anytime. It does not need good time to do that. Anytime we can start the transformation!

It is all like a family. Imagine Madurai as a family of four or five people of different natures. Based on all 5 of us, our team work progresses us to achievement and success. based on the goal we set, we move in the direction.

Based on the things we produce, automatically money will pour in and that once reinvested we get better. All this will lead to better life for everyone of us.

When are going to take the first steps!! Come on and join the madurai force - newmadurai.in.

We can work together to make Dream come true for Madurai into the roads of Singapore!

Youngsters - NRMs - Non-Resident Maduraiites - please look back!

Youngsters - NRMs - Non-Resident Maduraiites - please look back!

I refer to the Madurai based individuals who have gone out of Madurai for the need of work and earning money as Non-Resident Maduraiites - NRM. From here, I refer them as NRMs.

We can do a lot, if most of the folks who have gone outside Madurai for various ventures look back and serve the society. This is the real key to our growth to Madurai.

There are lot of wealth built, lot of ideas thought through, lot of energy on hold by many individuals. Manasu irukku, maargam illai. Many people think through about helping the society they have come through. But they don't have the courage and time to execute what they think.

The point I am trying put across is: There is lot of potential, in terms of what we can tap, but just that it is not being done.

Every man and woman should not just be born, just exist and die! There has to be a
meaning to everyone's life! The world we leave should be different than what we came in for the future generations. How many of us think of changing the world, before we
leave!? Atleast be a change, as Mahathma Gandhi said!!

We should look back and serve the soceity. Even 1% of your efforts is a big deal, for the soceity you were brought up in.

To join the force, please check out newmadurai.in and contact us. We can work together to make a change in Madurai.

Let us work together to make Madurai a New Madurai!!
