Madurai Man gets Bravery Award from Australian government

A stores supervisor from Madurai is among five Indians who have received bravery awards from the Australian government for their heroic rescue of around 25 injured soldiers from a blast site following a terror attack at Al Kasik in Iraq on August 4, 2008.

For Nagaraj Muthu Kamatchi, 32, presently employed in Nigeria, living on the edge in dangerous places is a way of life.

Along with seven other Indians, all employed in the catering division of the UN army, Mr Nagaraj has worked in cities like Baghdad, Tikrit, Al Kasik and even Karbala.

Sandeep Sherigar from Maharashtra, also a recipient of the Australian bravery award and a colleague of Mr Nagaraj, said that the two, along with Deepak Arondekar from Goa, had gone to the dining hall to have their lunch when a huge blast rocked their building.

“It was around 1.30 pm when we went to the dining hall where around 25 to 30 Australian soldiers were dining. The noise was deafening and there was blood all over the place,” Mr Sandeep said.

“Before we could panic, our head supervisor, Chris Hardley, rushed to help the victims and all four of us joined him,” Mr Sandeep added.

For the next few hours, the four men who had gone to provide civilian assistance were covered in the blood of the injured soldiers. “We did our best to carry whoever we could to a safer place,” said Mr Arondekar.

“I am glad that the Aust-ralian government has remembered us and honoured us with this recognition.”

Back home in Madurai, Mr Nagaraj’s proud mother Bhanumathy recalled her son’s passion for joining a catering course over electronics.

“He was passionate about the profession and that has helped him save many lives when he was working in Iraq,” she said.

Commending the bravery of Mr Nagaraj, the Australian government, in its citation said: “Despite the potential for further terrorist attack following the blasts, Mr Muthu Kamatchi, an untrained civilian, placed his own safety at risk by combing through the wreckage for his critically injured and dying friends and colleagues.

Individually, and with the support of other civilians, Mr Muthu Kamatchi helped move seriously wounded people onto functioning vehicles, and transported them to hospital.

These all lead to my health condition. As such Diabetes is not a disease, but it is a condition, which can be controlled and no problem - it cannot be cured, but it can be controlled with proper diet, exercise and medication, following the doctor consultation.

Same applies to public properties also. The public bus has to be repaired and that is an extra cost. You know how much does the front glass of the Bus (windshield glass)?

Atlast if it was for a good reason (even that is not acceptable), but it is not even for a good convincing reason. Stop this nonsense and be some good students!!

New Engineering College in Madurai - Dhaya Engineering College from Mr.MK Alagiri Educational Trust

Over 100 applications to start new engineering colleges in the State, including one by family members of Union Chemicals Minister M K Alagiri, are pending scrutiny by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) this year.

Till date, the AICTE has received 112 applications to start new institutions in TN, which includes 100 new engineering colleges, 10 integrated campuses (management plus engineering) and two architecture institutions.

According to sources, M K Alagiri Educational Trust, administered by family members and acquaintances of the DMK south zone organising secretary, has applied to the AICTE seeking permission to start Dhaya College of Engineering at Sivarakottai near Tirumangalam in Madurai. The Trust is functioning from Sathyasai Nagar in Madurai.

Of these 30 colleges have been proposed in Western TN, including Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri and Namakkal. Around 20 institutions have been proposed in and around Chennai. The AICTE has also extended its deadline for submitting applications for establishing new technical institutions and integrated campuses to March 31, which is the second such extension. HTC Global Services opens office in Chennai for BPO - has land in Madurai and Trichy

IT and BPO company, HTC Global Services inaugurated its 1.5 lakh sq ft facility at Guindy in Chennai on Tuesday. While the centre can house about 1,500 employees, HTC plans to hire over 3,000 professionals over the next one year, senior company official said.

Madhava Reddy, founder-president and CEO of HTC, said: “We invested over Rs 300 crore in the last one year to expand our current facilities in MEPZ (Madras Export Processing Zone) and to acquire new facilities in Chennai and Hyderabad. The centre in Guindy is our first own campus and we plan to move certain insurance operations there in phases.”

Michigan-headquartered HTC offers IT and back office solutions to clients across verticals.

According to Chary Mudumby, VP of HTC, the company is also considering expansion in a few tier II cities in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. HTC has land in cities including Thiruchirapalli (Trichy) and Madurai and it is mulling about starting BPO operations in the second tier cities, he added.

Coimbatore looking forward to become for I tier city from II tier; Software exports jumped; Madurai and Trichy still low in software exports

With education infrastructure and entrepreneurial spirit, the city is all set to become a top destination for IT companies, CTS said.

Residents should have belief that it can be a tier-1 destination for IT firms and work towards that goal, he told the 11th edition of _Connect Coimbatore', the annual IT event organised by CII here on Thursday.

"If Coimbatore aspires to be a tier-1 destination it should behave like a leader," he said. Though it would take five to 10 years to realise the goal, the city should stake its claim now.

Software exports from the city witnessed a 90% growth to Rs 710.66 crore for the year ended March 2010. Tier-2 locations such as Tiruchi and Madurai have clocked `25 crore in exports, state IT secretary PWC Davidar said.

Trichy and Madurai are still behind. They are looking about Rs.25 crores and still in Tier II and III destination cities. But, Coimbatore is thinking about jumping from II tier to I tier. That is a good news for Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu and India. In other hand, we expect Madurai and Trichy also to go up in the ladder soon. Let us do whatever possible for that.

Coimbatore International Airport -Flight Timings

Coimbatore International Airport (IATA: CJB, ICAO: VOCB) is an international airport located in Peelamedu, serving Coimbatore. It was previously known as Peelamedu Aerodrome or Coimbatore Civil Aerodrome. It is about 13 km from the city centre. Coimbatore Airport currently has one terminal, and one under construction. There are two hangars, one for private carriers and one for the Coimbatore Flying Club. The parking bays in the airport can accommodate a maximum of six aircraft, and the airport also has a fire station.

The airport has one runway that is 9,760 feet (2,970 m) in length - previously the runway was 8,500 ft (2,600 m) in length. Because of this runway expansion, the airport can accommodate aircraft such as the Boeing 747 and Airbus A330. An Instrument Landing System (ILS) is also being installed.
