What is the outlook of foreigners about Madurai? - Madurai Tourism

What is the outlook of foreigners about Madurai?

Madurai is usually not known by anybody outside India.
If you ask anyone in India (say north indians), about Madurai - they would coin Madurai Meenakshi Temple.
Good enough...atleast they have heard and known about Madurai.

Few months back, Shilpa Shetty was popular due to Madurai's lawsuit. That is not Madurai is popular for!:(

Anyway, if you ask a foreigner, they would not have heard about Madurai - may be Madras they might know.
If the foreigner is kind of keen on international happennings and interested in tourism, then Madurai might make sense to him!

However, Madurai is seen as a tourist destination for international and national tourists.
The international tourists usually plan to drop by Madurai, on the way to Kanyakumari or in their South India tour.

Overall, Madurai is seen as an ancient historical place and good for tourism.

OK, if it is a tourism destination, how much is government allotting for tourism development in Madurai?
Is Madurai Corporation and Madurai Government concentrating on tourism development in Madurai?

OK, these days there are too much talk about Madurai IT Park?
There are small businesses in and around Madurai.

OK, let us wait and see if the outlook of Madurai changes to a commercial, IT second tier Hub or and as a international trade location.

Will Madurai ever be seen in the Business Map of the World?
Will ever Foreigners outlook of Madurai expand and extend from Toursim to other industries as well?

Southern Tamil Nadu can attract more tourists - Madurai last spot for tourism in South Tamil Nadu currently

While Tamil Nadu saw around 30 lakh foreign tourists during 2010, only 35,000 of them visited Madurai. As the city is the gateway to the southern districts, the numbers of foreign tourists further down south are bound to decline even further.

Also, many tourists head to Kerala after an over-night stay at Madurai rather than head to southern districts.

While the Meenakshi Temple and King Tirumalai Naick Palace (Mahal) garner the lion's share of tourists coming to Madurai, there is also a rich collection of Jain vestiges, awareness of which is very limited. Many are in remote locations such as Arittappati a hillock located around 35 km east of Madurai.

Despite the presence of iconic tourist locations such as the majestic Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, grand Chettinad palaces and famous waterfalls, the tourism potential of the southern districts of Tamil Nadu is far from fully harnessed, opine stakeholders in the industry.

With little investment and a major publicity campaign, these places could boost the inflow of tourists to the region.

With a new Government having taken charge, they have expressed hope that fresh initiatives would be launched to fully harness the tourism potential of the region.

With a little boost to infrastructure and an awareness campaign among tourist operators and if the local community could be persuaded and made to understand the benefits of tourism, more palaces could be opened for viewing. This could increase the tourist flow.

FDI Investments Madurai Chennai Trichy Coimbatore Tamil Nadu India

Earlier, Foreign Direct Investments in the real estate was restricted to development of industrial parks, hotels, integrated townships and SEZ's. But on March 3, 2005, the Government of India replaced the integrated township policy to permit Foreign Direct Investments upto 100% in townships, housing, built-up infrastructure & construction - development projects, under automatic route (Press Note 2 (2005 series)). This amendment broadened the scope of FDI in Indian real estate arena & opened path towards investments in:

  • Townships
  • Housing
  • Commercial Premises
  • Hotels
  • Resorts
  • Hospitals
  • Industrial parks
  • Educational Institutions
  • Recreational Facilities & SEZ's etc

Further, it was ensured that FDI backed projects would be accorded national treatment at par with local developers. The State Government's/ Municipal bodies now approve projects for construction-development involving foreign investment.

FDI in Real Estate - Aspects to be considered
With the increasing foreign direct investments in the real-estate business, minimum built up area in case of construction-development projects - super built up area or covered (carpet) area may be governed by local regulations which is typically based by Floor Space Index (FSI)/ Floor Area Ratio (FAR)

The requirement of minimum land area of 25 acres is only for projects where land developed with provision of common facilities & infrastructure for subsequent sale as plots for independent housing i.e. serviced housing plots. By implication, for 'constructed housing', criteria of minimum built up area of 50,000 sq mtrs should apply.

The minimum capitalization requirement of US$ 5 million, i.e., capitalization requirement for JV company or minimum capital contribution by foreign investor refers to capital to be brought in by the foreign investor in the JV Company.

FDI in Industrial Parks and Hotels & Tourism

Investment by foreign directs in Indian industrial parks, hotels & tourism hold the following the aspects:

Industrial Park

  • FDI upto 100% permitted under automatic route in Industrial Parks (ie Technology Parks, Biotech Parks), approved by State Government

Approval from Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion under Industrial Park Scheme, 2002 is only for availing 100% tax holiday
Hotels & Tourism

  • 100% FDI permitted in Hotels & Tourism under automatic route

FDI in Hotels should not be governed by Press Note 2 (2005 series), clarification still awaited on the issue.

FDI in Special Economic Zone (SEZ)

Cent percent investment is permitted under automatic route for setting up of SEZs. The SEZ Bill, 2005 passed by Parliament and is awaiting President's assent. This bill:

  • Provides single window approval mechanism for developers & units in SEZs

Provides fiscal concessions for SEZ units/ developers - exemption from customs duty, excise, cess, service tax, income tax, stamp duty (under Indian Stamp Act, 1899), etc.
Moreover, the bill is expected to trigger significant inflow of funds in infrastructure, increase production capacity and creation of new employment opportunities in the Indian economy.

FDI in Construction & Development

The State Government's/ Municipal bodies will now approve projects for construction-development involving foreign investment. These projects, backed by FDI, will be accorded national treatment at par with local developers. The various criteria & conditions governing these investments are:

Criteria for Development

  • Minimum 10 hectares/ 25 acres area to be developed for serviced housing plots
  • For construction-development projects, minimum built-up area of 50,000 sq mts prescribed

In case of a combination project, any one of above two conditions would suffice

Conditions for Investment

  • Minimum capitalization of US$ 10 million for wholly owned subsidiaries US$ 5 million for joint ventures with Indian partners
  • Funds to be brought in within 6 months of commencement of business

Original investment cannot be repatriated before a period of 3 years from completion of minimum capitalization. Investor may be permitted to exit earlier with prior Government approval

Other Conditions

  • At least 50% of project must be developed within of 5 years from date of obtaining all statutory clearances
  • Project to conform with norms & standards laid down by respective State authorities
  • Investor is responsible for obtaining all necessary approvals as prescribed under applicable rules/bye-Laws/regulations of the State

Concerned Authority will monitor compliance of prescribed conditions by developer.
The active participation of FDI's in the Indian real estate industry has propelled an extensive growth & expansion of the industry, leading to a boom in the real estate investment. Further, enhancing Indian infrastructure & providing a sustainable growth.

Rs.12 Crore allocated to boost facelift to Madurai Tourism

Aimed at promoting Madurai as the best tourist destination in South India, the district administration has identified several tourist spots to showcase them to both foreign and domestic tourists. These spots include Vandiyur kanmoi (tank), Mariamman Teppakulam, Sathaiyar dam, Kutladampatti, Perungamanallur.

“To draw more tourists to Madurai, the district administration has chalked out various plans and taken a slew of measures in tapping its tourism potential. A detailed project report at an estimated cost of Rs15 crore has been prepared and sent to the government for approval,” U Sagayam, Collector, Madurai district said yesterday, according to a Deccan Chronicle report.

Under the tourism promotion scheme, Sagayam said several infrastructure development works including laying roads, bridges, constructing toilet facilities and creating parks would be taken up. To achieve the twin objective of conserving water resources and converting them into recreational spots, boating facilities would be arranged at Vandiyur tank, Mariamman Teppakulam and Sathaiyar dam.

As regards the Vandiyur tank, plans are afoot to deepen and create an island-like structure at the centre of the tank and beautify the edges along with the formation of an eco-heritage walkway. Efforts were on for permanent storage of water at Mariamman Teppakulam where boating would be made available till 7 pm daily after ensuring that all safety measures are in place.

The central Mandapam in the tank would be beautified with installation of statues to depict Tamil culture. Kutladampatti that is home to waterfalls would have pucca roads. “Under Nabard scheme, roads were being laid for a distance of 5 km from the village to the falls at a cost of Rs 39 lakh,” Sagayam said.

Sagayam added, “Aside from this, the historic building where Mahatma Gandhi gave up his formal attire and changed to simple khadi dhoti and a shawl to identify himself with the common man will be converted into a memorial. Also, in memory of the 16 persons killed for fighting against the Criminal Tribes Act of the British at Perungamanallur near Usilampatti in 1920, a memorial would be raised.”

When will Madurai become/operate International Customs Airport - Madurai Airport

Madurai airport is poised for a major leap with the decks being cleared for the operation of international flights. Madurai airport is all set to become International Airport, but no Airlines is operating yet. All approvals from Centre is provided for Madurai Airport to operate as Customs and International airport, but the airlines are not ready to operate from Madurai yet. The operators are afraid to operate of any loss. Even the Tamil nadu Chamber of Commerce had appealed in all possible ways, but no international flight yet. Only Domestic flights are operating. That is the situation today. One more reason told is - Bilateral Airport Treaties entered between India and other countries(except Srilanka) does not include Madurai.

The notification declaring Madurai airport as customs airport was issued by the Centre in January. Subsequently we started the works facilitating the establishment of customs counters. Now, space for customs as well as immigration counters has been earmarked. As many as ten immigration counters are at the airport.

Sankiah Pandian said that the airport was ready with all facilities required for international flight services. "We are only waiting for international flight services to commence operation ," he said. The airport was established in the year 1957 and a new swanky terminal was inaugurated in 2009 sprawling across 189,000 sq ft. Only four airlines currently operate flights to Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore and New Delhi.

In another note - Sri Lankan Airlines, Manager (Tamil Nadu and Karnataka), B. Pirathapan, said that unless the travel agents guaranteed the profitability of flight operations to Colombo, the airlines industry, which was going through a rough patch, would not come to Madurai. “We are for making profit. There should be enough number of passengers to convince our bosses to launch operations from Madurai,” he said.

The senior president of Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, S. Rethinavelu, said that the chamber had promised Air Asia to bear the initial loss, if any, caused to the airlines on operation in Madurai-Kuala Lumpur route. “We are sure there would be no loss at all,” he said.

The products of textile, rubber, jasmine and fish processing units were among the major goods that would give potential for international cargo movement. International operations would also help domestic tourism and medical tourism, he said. Around 50 to 70 passengers were going to each of foreign destinations of Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Dubai/Sharjah, Muscat and Colombo from the southern districts every day, he added.
Airport Director, Sangaiah Pandian, promised to extend all help to the airlines, including night operations from Madurai. The airliners need not bother that Madurai airport would eat into their revenues from Tiruchi.

Apart from having been declared as a ‘Customs Airport,' it also has a world-class high-tech integrated terminal built at a cost of Rs.130 crore. The runway has been extended to 7500 feet to facilitate introduction of international flights.
Chamber senior president S. Rethinavelu informed the Union Minister that there was lot of potential for both passenger and freight traffic for international flights from Madurai to Malaysia, Singapore, Muscat, Dubai, Sharjah and Sri Lanka. However, during chamber delegations to some of these countries, they were told by international air liners that, with the exception of Sri Lanka, Madurai Airport had not been included in the Bilateral Airport Treaties entered between India and those countries. This was preventing air line companies from operating international flights to Madurai Airport.

Reduce Prostitution in Madurai and send to rehab

Prostitution is a business of girls where girls or ladies sell their body for pleasure of men. Prostitution happens in different levels of society. In high class, it is done in apartments or individual houses or the girls might be brought to the house via tinted glass covered cars etc.,
In lower class, all the girls might be available in bus stands or public places for pick up. Or there might be agents to help the customers to reach the girls.

Well, that was a definition of prostitution. However, how these girls are coming to this business? Due to unavoidable circumstances and due to wrong minded relatives etc., and once they are into this loop, they don't have any other option and they continue it. Well, of course the society does not accept back the same person as well.

Is prostitution good or bad for the society? There are various perspectives to it. It is good in some ways and it controls some crimes, but in lot many ways more and more innocent girls are brought into this business for flourishing the business. This is not good for the society.

Recently I saw a prostitute in Mattuthavani bus stand and she was negotiating with a potential customer. Also I noticed one more person in Periyar bus stand and Arapalayam bus stand.

Well, I request the government to do some kind of resolution to this. I would not request the government to punish the girls or ladies, but to give them alternatives. To give them some other way of business which is recognized in the society. To give them some other life. Explain them that this is not it and they can lead normal life. Explain them that they can change their lives and government can help them.

There is no use in punishing them, but to help them. Even non-profit organizations can help them and not just government has to help. May be they can be joined into some old age homes where the old people can be helped and the same time do not reveal their past life to anybody and keep that matter confidential.

You know - that will be better. Due to the prostitution in Madurai, there is high possibility of AIDS and other diseases being spread to normal people also. Here is the Madurai statistics for AIDS disease. Due to a man's mistake, even the women folks and children end up getting AIDS which is not of their mistake. In a monthly time frame, there are cases reported in Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai. We have written article about that before.

Again, it is no use punishing them and putting them in jail, but only to have them put in rehab, counsel them and help them. The girls have no other option most of the times.

Well, to identify these prostitutes in Madurai - here are some tips to find out - they wear bright coloured saree or chudithar, lot of make up, bunch of flowers, they might be even wearing a thaali (mangal soothra) kayaru, wearing anklets sometimes. In terms of behavior, they look straight into the men's eyes and try to check your acceptance or your interest. Usually they are alone or they talk to some shop keepers, some auto walas touching their hands etc.,

This article is not to hurt anyone, but to have a cleaner Madurai and have a healthy Madurai.

Another reason we wrote this article is in terms of keywords of Madurai in internet, we are finding that there is lot of searches for Madurai Prostitute, Madurai Prostitute mobile number, madurai prostitute number, Madurai Prostitute Hotels, Madurai sex, Madurai girls, Prostitutes in Madurai, sex tourism in Madurai and interesting the searches are from outside Madurai and people are looking for this kind of activity in Madurai. Another interesting factor is many searches are from foreign countries as well. Is somebody distributing girls to tourists?

I am not sure where this girls distribution happens or where this business happens and how they do it etc., but a clear probe into this matter from Collector or Commissioner will be helpful.

We do not want to have Madurai to be a Sex tourism spot for tourists, like the way some of the far east asian countries are there today for Caucasian (Europe or US folks) tourists.

We from New Madurai Foundation request the government officials or Non-profit foundation to take action(do not punish but do rehab) of this business folks. Some one has to take action against it. Preferably government can do the needful.

This article is submitted to Collector and Commissioner.

I want to bring everything world class in Madurai. You might think why should I work on Madurai to get things straightened. Yes. I am thinking globally, acting locally, which I think is a success formula. Seeing the changes I make in Madurai, that exemplify for other cities over the country.

37. Social Welfare
38. Tamil Nadu Electricity Board
39. Tourism
40. Transport
41. TWAD

People might think I am crazy, but probably I am. Why am I worrying only about Madurai - shouldn't I be concerned about all about India or all about mankind? You are right! But, my approach is - if we are able to make some positive change in Madurai, which is a small city in India and it is a part of India - automatically this positive change will spread across India and across the world. This is my opinion and I believe in this chain reaction.

In my life time, I can only work on something small and I want to achieve that. I don't want to take up a task in my life, which I will not be able to achieve it. I want to take up something which is challenging and at the same time achievable!! That is why Madurai!!! Moreover, I love Madurai!!!

Well, I have not talked yet about "remembering madurai". I have to talk more about Madurai in terms of what I remember!:-) in the following part II!!
