Alternate ways of Power Generation is considered in Madurai Corporation

As the state is facing strong power inadequacy, the Madurai Corporation has commenced emphasising on energy generation from alternate steps like solar and bio-ethanol. During the council meeting held yesterday, a resolution has been passed to call tenders from eligible firms to establish solar projects in the corporation under the Public Private Partnership (PPP).

The resolution claimed that power supply for corporation requiring such as pumping stations and taxation centres had considerably rise after the corporation limits have been expanded from 72 wards to 100 wards. With the rising energy needs, the corporation has decided to select eligible players for solar power projects. After receiving government nod, they will moving ahead with calling for the tenders via PPP.

The present demand of the city can be projected to vary between 160 MW-180 MW per day for 4.16 lakh connections in the city.

Madurai Corporation passed important resolution on green energy to produce bio-ethanol and e-diesel by using the extra 250 tonnes of garbage generated from the newly annexed areas of the corporation. The resolution also consisted of producing electricity from bio-ethanol.

Welfare Projects in Madurai Corporation - Solid Waste Management

The city corporation has chalked out a series of welfare projects to develop the erstwhile panchayats and town panchayats annexed with the corporation recently. The civic body has planned to implement a Rs 40 crore solid waste management project for the three municipalities, three town panchayats and 11 village panchayats annexed to the corporation. The solid waste management works will commence soon as Rs 10 crore has been sanctioned.

Madurai Corporation to set up Dialysis Facility Centre in Madurai for poor patients

The city corporation plans to set up a state-of-the-art dialysis centre. Seeking the permission of the house, mayor VV Rajan Chellappa told councillors that the centre has become necessary since the total population of the city has increased to 15.61 lakhs, and 5-10% of them suffer from renal problems, needing dialysis facilities. "We have found that dialysis facilities are not available for poor patients at affordable prices in the city. Hence, we have decided to set up a dialysis facility to service poor people," he said.

Tamil Nadu State Budget for Madurai - What is good for Madurai from the budget 2012-2013?

The Rs. 250-crore budgetary allocation made by the State Government for Madurai Corporation on Monday is very well appreciated for Madurai. 

 Mr.N. Sethuraman said that the allocation of Rs. 24 crore for cancer treatment centres at Madurai and Coimbatore was laudable. 

 Noting that the Budget had no new tax proposals except on liquor, Chamber senior president S. Rethinavelu said that the one time special allocation of Rs. 250 crore to Madurai Corporation for developing infrastructure would go a long way in ensuring free flow of traffic in the city, the lack of which has severely inhibited industrial growth.

Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (MADITSSIA) has terming the budget as industry-oriented and said that the allotment of Rs.50 crore for developing District Industries Centre in all 32 districts would help micro, small and medium enterprises in the State. 

The funds would not only help the pending projects under phase one of Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNRUM) completed, but also ensure that the local body gets more funds for its infrastructure development under the Phase Two of the mission.

The Rs. 250 crore would take care of the Corporation's 30 per cent contribution to be made for the over Rs. 600 crore worth five projects taken up under the mission.  A total of Rs. 600 crore worth projects had been sanctioned under the mission with 50 per cent contribution by the Centre, 20 per cent contribution by the State and 30 per cent contribution by the local body Madurai Corporation. 

The fund-starved Corporation could not make its contribution for the works that brought the construction work of underground drainage (UGD) project and the lining of Storm Water Drainage (SWD) project to a grinding halt in the last quarter of 2010. But, now it will be taken care.

Trade bodies in Madurai says this budget is a launch pad for extension of various current and future schemes.

Mattuthavani Bus stand Toilets - Charged me 3 Rs

Last time Collector Sagayam IAS or government comes and changes the corporation toilets in Mattuthavani bus stand to charge only Re.1 for the Toilets, but every time I go and they ask for Rs.3.

The passengers are in rush and they just want to complete their toilet work, so they just give Rs.3 and move on.

Isn't it Re.1? This will make people to go for toilets in open space automatically, if the officials do not take a look at it.

Moreover, it is not neat as well.

If I was Mayor of Madurai, Things to do

If was Mayor of Madurai, I would do the following -

I would run Madurai like a commercial company with a combination of non-profit organization, not just like a non-profit organization only.

Check the budget, balance sheet, income, expenses of Madurai Corporation.
I will think how the income can be increased, and at the same time people getting benefitted.

With the given funds, find out what are the channels of income. How to increase the channels of income? Find that out.

Get those companies and get those divisions function very well and make it productive and get more income.

Work on getting entrepreneurship improved. Work on getting the infrastructure of the Madurai Corporation improved, and not just road etc., also the infrastructure like Electricity, Water etc.,
Companies has to be appreciated for more business. More business, more tax payment and more employment happens.

I will go to colleges and education centres to stay in Madurai and get employed or start something of their own to provide employment.

Today, biggest hurdle every startup business in Madurai faces is electricity problem, human resources problem and funding problem.

Create a better Madurai and name it as Greater Madurai next to Madurai, to create a new city by itself. There are lot of opportunities to be created and availed even today. Madurai today is set for only a limit. There is an extreme need to create a new city near Madurai or an extended city to develop and improve.

This is not the limit, but there will be more to the wish and the things to do, if I have to become a Mayor of Madurai.

Madurai Corporation Civic Complaints Cell - Phone Number - Contact Details for Grievances

The Madurai Corporation has set up a 'complaints cell' that will function from 7am to 7pm on weekdays to address grievances related to civic issues of residents. The cell has been assigned the toll-free number 1800-425-8445 which will become operational from Wednesday. November 16, 2011.

If the residents are unable to reach the toll-free number, they can also dial 0452-2537214 or 0452-2537215 and register their complaints. Once their complaint is taken note of, the officer will give the complainant a register number which would also be his complaint number for further communication.

Increasing Beggars, Mentally challenged, roadside orphans, old people in Madurai

If you have gone through some main roads in Madurai, you will notice a common scenario around these areas. Some of the areas to coin are - Madurai Bus stands, Madurai Temple areas, Madurai Railway station front and nearby areas, Meenakshi amman temple chithrai streets, Thiruparankundram, Bypass road, Koodal azhagar perumal temple areas, Azhagar Koil area, North Veli Street, Goripalayam areas.

In these areas, there are increasing amount of Beggars, Mentally challenged, roadside orphans, old age people, people from other states begging in different areas.

These people has to be rehabilitated or put them in appropriate orphanages or arrested for any background work of putting children to begging etc., I think this can be only done by Corporation officials, Non-profit organizations in Madurai and Madurai Police Department.

If some action could be taken, that will be helpful. May be corporation could be a partner in these kind of orphanages and fund little bit and have the non-profit organizations to take care of these cases and at most reduce these kind of people in Madurai. This could be a part of Clean Madurai project for Madurai Corporation. Hope someone listens to this advice.

Madurai Corporation Possible Corruption? Many CBI Raids in Madurai, Trichy, Erode in general

There are many CBI raids all over Tamil Nadu and especially in Madurai, Trichy, Chennai, Erode, Salem etc.,

Minister KN Nehru in Trichy is in trouble for a 'possible' asset abduction case in Trichy. In Erode and Chennai there are many cases filed for Land/Property abduction case.

Yesterday, there were raids in Paramount Airways, Oriental Insurance Company offices and concerned owners residence, Spice Jet etc.,

In addition, Madurai Corporation office was also raided by CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation). For many infrastructure projects, crores of rupees were allotted by ministry (Jawarharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM)) Rs.2496 Crores in 2007. For river improvement and blocking projects, a Bangalore based company called Deepika Enterprises was allotted with the project. Now, the company itself seems to be missing in action. Having that situation, around 800 tonnes of rods were bought. Out of which 70 were used. 20 is remaining, but remaining 710 tonnes of rods were sold for a rate, which costs around Rs. 23.60 Crores.

Overall, there are many open points, which are not accounted properly. If it is properly accounted and tallied, then no issues and no one will have trouble. If not, Mayor Mrs.Thenmozhi Gopinathan and Deputy Mayor Mr.PM Mannan of Madurai and many others in administration and governing Madurai and Corporation might be in trouble. Still, anything is not confirmed!!

Today also the interrogation will be continued by the Crime and Anti-Corruption force of Police in Madurai.

Madurai Budget Snapshot for the year 2010-2011 and 2011-2012

Madurai's Earnings is Rs.175 crores and 37 lakhs
Madurai's Expenditure Rs.183 crores and 37 lakhs

Opposition parties like ADMK and DMDK stepped out from the Assembly hall, for not accepting the loss or deficit of Rs.8 Crores.

It is said that around Rs.5.82 crores was spent on maintenance of highways (27 kms of Mattuthavani to Thirumangalam highways). But opposition parties claim that there is not much work done and how come this amount is deficit (source: dinamalar).

Moreover, Madurai has got loan it seems, which is being given back slowly with interest. Madurai Commissioner Sebastian said - "A loan of around Rs.29 crores for the interest of 12.5% is got, so it is being given back. Now, around 11 crores is given back, but it is expected that by 2016, it has to be given back".

Mayor of Madurai Mrs.Thenmozhi Gopinathan has said that there is already plans for fulfilling the deficit amount in the coming years. Given the property taxes and Business taxes, we will be able to make it ok.

Madurai Machan - I wish there are more businesses and we come up with more turnover for Madurai! Long live Madurai!!

Madurai Corporation extends 172 Sq.Km till Tirumangalam, Madurai High Court etc.,

In 1971, Madurai got the approval for Corporation status and till date it is being continued as the great Corporation. At that time, the area of Madurai Corporation limit was 22 Sq.Kms.

In 1974, Madurai was added with 13 villages in and around and extended to 52 Sq.kms.

In all these years, there was no extension done to Madurai Corporation and there has been population increase to the extent of 23,000 people per sq.km.

By 2008, there were discussions kick-started to extend to 725 Sq.kms. There were many oppositions to it and later it was decided that it would be extended to 172 Sq.kms by including various villages around Madurai.

The village near Airport called Perungudi and the village near Madurai Kamaraj University were not included in this expansion for some reason.

Officers are meeting in chennai for the same and to finalize. However, here are the villages included in this phase of expansion -

Nagaraatchis - Thirumangalam, Thiruparankundram, Avaniyapuram, Aanaiyur;
PaerOoraatchis - Vilangudi, Thirunagar, R.V. Patti;
21 Ooraatchis - Melamadai, Vandiyoor, Uthangudi, Naaganaagulam, Thiruppaalai, Kannanendhal, Vilaacheri, Pudhukkulam bit 1, Pudhukkulam bit 2, yergudi, Achampaththu, Iravadhanalloor, Chinna Anuppaanadi, Thiyagarajar Colony, Sinthaamani, Thoppoor (thoppur), Thanakkangulam, Nilayur bit 1, Nilayoor Bit 2, Naagamalai Pudhukkottai, Kappaloor, Uchchappatti and Madurai High court area.

This means that benefits of Corporation and infrastructure funds of Madurai Corporation would apply to all these outskirts villages and also various other benefits like Police, Water, Electricity etc., of the Madurai Corporation would apply to these extended areas as well.

It is a good news for Real Estate and also it will ease the population, space constraints and various other extension benefits!!!
