Various organisations have called for a bandh in Madurai district on December 22 to condemn the Kerala government’s attitude on the Mullaiperiyar dam issue. Pledging support, president of the TN Foodgrains Merchants’ Association S P Jeyapragasam, on Saturday, said that the farmers in Madurai and nearby districts would be deprived of water if Kerala went ahead with decommissioning the dam. A fast will be organised on the day at the MADITSSIA hall.

Madurai shows that Mullai Periyar Dam issue is important for Madurai, because that helps preventing any drought that could happen in future and that has happenned in past. That is the reason this dam was built to make Madurai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram belt to be wet for some food to be cultivated!

If I was Mayor of Madurai, Things to do

If was Mayor of Madurai, I would do the following -

I would run Madurai like a commercial company with a combination of non-profit organization, not just like a non-profit organization only.

Check the budget, balance sheet, income, expenses of Madurai Corporation.
I will think how the income can be increased, and at the same time people getting benefitted.

With the given funds, find out what are the channels of income. How to increase the channels of income? Find that out.

Get those companies and get those divisions function very well and make it productive and get more income.

Work on getting entrepreneurship improved. Work on getting the infrastructure of the Madurai Corporation improved, and not just road etc., also the infrastructure like Electricity, Water etc.,
Companies has to be appreciated for more business. More business, more tax payment and more employment happens.

I will go to colleges and education centres to stay in Madurai and get employed or start something of their own to provide employment.

Today, biggest hurdle every startup business in Madurai faces is electricity problem, human resources problem and funding problem.

Create a better Madurai and name it as Greater Madurai next to Madurai, to create a new city by itself. There are lot of opportunities to be created and availed even today. Madurai today is set for only a limit. There is an extreme need to create a new city near Madurai or an extended city to develop and improve.

This is not the limit, but there will be more to the wish and the things to do, if I have to become a Mayor of Madurai.

INTEGRATED GOAT farming is a viable income-generating sector, especially for marginal farmers. "Integrating goat farming with cropping systems like agro forestry models such as, agrisilviculture, hortipasture, boundary plantations, wind belts and silvipasture models with trees and grasses can be established in wastelands to supplement farm income," said Dr. Sheriff.

Feeding variety
Being hardy animals, goats can be fed on Neem (Azadiracta indica) and a wide variety of fodders and grasses such as Kolukattai grass (Cenchrus ciliaris), Guinea grass (Panicum maximum), Stylo (Stylosanthus hamata), Agathi (Sesbania grandiflora), Fodder cowpea (Vigna uinguiculata) and Vagai (Albizia lebbek).

For healthy and active animals, farmers are advised to provide a concentrate mixture of 50 parts of wheat, maize or broken rice, 25 parts of groundnut cake, 23 parts of wheat bran or rice bran, one part of mineral mixture and one part of common salt.

Breeding ratio

Does (female goats) normally come to heat in one to one and half years of age. The normal breeding ratio is one buck for 25 does. Goats can be bred three times a year. Usually a buck can service 20-25 does in a single breeding season. For pregnant does, farmers should provide 300 gm of concentrate feed comprising a mixture of groundnut cake, fish meal, rice, bran and mineral salts.The gestation period usually lasts for 147-149 days. It is advisable to keep pregnant does in separate enclosures with straw bedding and fresh water. In case of any difficulty during delivery of lambs immediate veterinary attention is necessary. As soon the lamb is born the mucous on its face and nostrils should be removed to help breathing. The newborn lamb is to be fed with its mother's milk immediately. Lactation period usually lasts for four months. In a well-maintained flock, healthy does yield about one and half litre of milk daily. In case the mother dies, foster does, that are in milking, may be allowed to feed the lamb.In the absence of any milking doe, cow or buffalo's milk may be fed to the lamb using a rubber teat. Generally mortality in kids is ten per cent and in adults 5-10 per cent.

The Madurai-based TVS Logistics Services has acquired U.S.-based Manufacturers Equipment and Supply Company (Mesco) to consolidate its holdings in TVS America, a top company official said Tuesday.

"We have acquired the $30 million revenue MESCO based in Michigan and 51 percent stakes of Global Rush, U.S. in TVS America at an outlay of around 50 crore. We have formed a holding company in the U.S. - TVS Logistics America - to house our investments in the U.S.," Managing Director R. Dinesh told reporters.

Leading two and three wheeler tyre maker, TVS Srichakra, which saw it’s turnover crossing Rs 1,000 crore mark during last financial year, plans going into new product segment Tractor Radial Tyres and as also strong brand building activities to boost its share in the after market segment.

This is one of the efforts to de-risking the business of only two-wheeler manufacturing and diversification into Off-road radial tyres and also building a stronger brand in this market.

The company expects stronger turnover growth during this year primarily from American markets as also from other new markets, while it will also focus on exporting two wheeler tyres to countries like South America.

The Madurai-based company, which exports mainly off-the-road tyres, aims higher growth in export turnover as its export destinations are bouncing back and has reached pre-recession days in volumes.
