Madurai Corporation inviting tenders for Solar Plants - Going Green Madurai

With the state reeling under a severe power crunch, the Madurai Corporation has started focusing on energy generation from alternate measures such as solar and bio-ethanol. During the council meeting held on Wednesday, a resolution was passed to call tenders from eligible companies to set up solar projects in the corporation under the Public Private Partnership (PPP).

Much Neat Motel in Trichy to Chennai Road

I have been travelling between Madurai and Chennai for past 2 years in TNSTC and SETC buses very regularly. Usually (at least as I know for 2 years), all TNSTC and SETC buses stop in a totally dirty motels, which has poor toilet facilities - like very poorly maintained toilets, even the space of the motel, that is the roads/parking spaces inside the motel are always dirty, full of swamp and you cannot even walk on those roads/spaces inside.

Yesterday, when I came by TNSTC A/C bus from Madurai to Chennai. At around 2:30 AM they stopped at a new place, which was maintained by Reliance Group. I think only the private buses park there for tea break. However, these days TNSTC buses also have started to park here looks like.

I asked a security guard there, which place is this. This is 26 kms from Villupuram and this is outskirts of ulundurpet. The place is called Badhur and anybody will know if you refer as Reliance Petrol Bunk Baadhur.

Many of my co-passengers were wondering, where did we land! We have never seen this kind of motel before, if you have only travelled by the government buses. I remember I have come to this place before, when I have travelled via Parveen Travels.

Anyway, the beauty is - at 2:30 AM, couple of women were really sweeping that space - i mean really sweeping and making that space clean. All the space inside this motel were made of Tar road. Some of my co-passengers were shocked and were pleased. These kind of motels also exist in Madurai to Chennai NH Highways Road.

I am sure the motel operators might be misusing the cleanliness and charge more to the customers. At any case, that is ok, as long as it goes to right pockets.

If all the motels are kept this clean, that will be great. I will be much proud of the Highways in Tamil Nadu. Since I have travelled/lived in US, I kind of have an idea of how neat a motel is in other countries. Hence, the comparison.

Increasing Beggars, Mentally challenged, roadside orphans, old people in Madurai

If you have gone through some main roads in Madurai, you will notice a common scenario around these areas. Some of the areas to coin are - Madurai Bus stands, Madurai Temple areas, Madurai Railway station front and nearby areas, Meenakshi amman temple chithrai streets, Thiruparankundram, Bypass road, Koodal azhagar perumal temple areas, Azhagar Koil area, North Veli Street, Goripalayam areas.

In these areas, there are increasing amount of Beggars, Mentally challenged, roadside orphans, old age people, people from other states begging in different areas.

These people has to be rehabilitated or put them in appropriate orphanages or arrested for any background work of putting children to begging etc., I think this can be only done by Corporation officials, Non-profit organizations in Madurai and Madurai Police Department.

If some action could be taken, that will be helpful. May be corporation could be a partner in these kind of orphanages and fund little bit and have the non-profit organizations to take care of these cases and at most reduce these kind of people in Madurai. This could be a part of Clean Madurai project for Madurai Corporation. Hope someone listens to this advice.

Environment protection for future - keep Green Madurai

We all worry about the fact that today it was very hot and sultry. Without A/C or Fan we are not able to survive etc., We keep nagging and worrying about the weather and climate.

However, we do not realize a fact that the weather changes and hot climate is all because of our activities. We keep using plastics, polythene bags for our convenience and when it goes to land or mud, it does not biologically decompose like any other bio-degradable products and this becomes a problem because - the plastics stay as it is in the mud and spoil the sand and also the water content. This creates all kinds of environmental problems.

Those days we used to use Cloth Bags (Manjal thuni pai) and that was very helpful. Even in foreign countries they have changed to Cloth bags and when they come for grocery, they get their own bags, like the way we(Indians) used to do long back. Why don't we change back to our own style, which was actually correct?

And in lot many things we keep following the developed countries and realize that what we have been doing was absolutely correct and we will have to get back someday. Even in terms of culture the way we are going is not right and when the developed countries realize that and we will realize after that because we keep following them all the time. We need to keep out own originality. I think I have two topics here already - environmental protection (GREEN) and western followings.

Clean Chennai - Why not Clean Madurai? Trichy? Coimbatore?

Two days back Chief Minister Ms.J Jayalalitha went on a helicopter ride to identify the garbage in Chennai and promised that within 3 months all of the garbage will be removed in Chennai.

This is good! Chennai is the capital and sufficient arrangements are made to remove and make Chennai clean. Why don't we have separate teams to clean the unnecessary garbages in Madurai, Trichy and Coimbatore.

They are also upcoming cities in Tamil Nadu and they have to be cleaned as well. I as a citizen of India and Tamil Nadu request the ministry or officials to implement the same in other cities of Tamil Nadu, and not just Chennai!

Green Movement in Madurai by CII Madurai Confederation of Indian Industries Thiagarajar College of Engineering TCE

The Confederation of Indian Industries (Madurai Zone) has launched a Green Movement to mark World Environment day celebrations at Thiagarajar College of Engineering (TCE) near Madurai.

According to a release, Kalyani Associates joined the CII in undertaking the movement.

Speaking at the function last evening, T Kannan, TCE chairman, said seven lakh litres of diesel were consumed in Madurai alone,and each litre emitted two kg of carbon di oxide.

District Forest Officer Rakesh Kumar Jagania said college students should respect the forests and not litter forest areas and hills and areas around water falls.

It is good to see such movements slowly kicking in and this is a good start.

In Madurai Removal of Hoarding and Posters without permission - Madurai changing slowly for good

We have written before about the Poster Advertisement Culture in Madurai.

Latest news is -

The hoarding, posters in Madurai without permission from Madurai Corporation, Municipality, Panchayaths or Collector is illegal as such, as a matter of fact.

Hence, Madurai Collector U Sagayam has requested owners to remove their hoardings or posters in public places without prior permission from authorities. If the owners do not remove these hoardings or posters, corporation will have to remove these posters and the cost of removal will be charged to the owners.

This is very good. At least here after the marriage banners, function hoardings will not be there in main areas in Madurai and spoil the beauty of Madurai!!

In other note, around 23 heavy duty vehicles have been stopped near Thirumangalam, Madurai for Drink and Drive! They were fined or jailed and then released. This is good! This will avoid lot of accidents in future!

Plastic usage banned by January 2011 in Madurai - Green Madurai

It is noted that plastic usage in Madurai is banned by January 1st 2011 by the previous Madurai Collector Mr.Kamaraj IAS. It is said the carry bags, storage items production and the usage is not to be done in any manner. Due to the bio-non-degradable nature of Plastics, it is said that

Instead only paper or leave products has to be used for carrying, food storage, serving etc., not plastic.

Though the rule or law is created and effective January 2011 it has to start. However with the elections and Government busy taking over etc., this is not taken care yet.

Even the awareness is not created among the people and also sufficient controlling measures by police or officials are not done yet in Madurai.

Respected Madurai Collector or Commissioner, can we know when this will be taken care? We, New Madurai Foundation, request you to do the needful. You will know better, but this is probably just a reminder or request!

Madurai as Green City, rather than Singapore

Madurai MP and Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers, Mr.M.K. Alagiri, had promised to turn the constituency greener in his election manifesto. On that note, here is a previous article about Greener Madurai.

Today, He planted 1 lakh saplings around the Mariamman Teppakulam. In this way, Mr.Azhagiri fulfills one of the election manifesto items.

In this function, he also mentioned that he would like to make Madurai a greener city, than promising to make it as Singapore.

This is only a madurai news item.

Greener Madurai

The Madurai MP and Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers, M.K. Alagiri, had promised to turn the constituency greener in his election manifesto. He will soon launch the programme by planting saplings around the Mariamman Teppakulam.

New Year will ring in on a greener note for Madurai city and its suburbs. If things go as per plan, there will be one lakh more saplings in the Madurai Parliamentary constituency by the end of 2010.

A committee headed by the Chairman of Tamil Nadu State Agricultural Marketing Board, K.P.T. Ganesan, has been formed to implement ‘project greenery.’

Educational institutions and residents’ welfare associations to join their efforts. Saplings will be given free of cost for planting wherever they want. Tree guards will also be provided, if necessary.

Good to go - GREEN MADURAI!!!
