Mariamman Teppakulam Madurai turning into TASMAC extension - anti-social activities
The Mariamman Temple water tank of the Mariamman temple is not just a religious site but also heritage site but now has become a haven for anti - social elements.
According to the Tamil Nadu liquor (Retail Vending) rules, 1989 wine shops should be located 50 meters away from temple or educational institutions, but TASMAC in Teppakulam is very close to the temple. "It should be shifted from there".
The dry temple tank at Mariamman Temple, one of the popular land marks in Madurai, has turned into a den for anti-social elements in the evenings, people in the locality have alleged.
Groups of men gather in the temple tank and treat it as an open-air bar, posing as a nuisance to the public in the locality who visit the tank.
Several people from across the district visit the Sri Mariamman temple maintained by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department. Later they would spend some time at the tank. But anti-social elements use it as 'bar' during the evening. A TASMAC wine shop is located very close to the tank from where they purchase liquor and go straight to the tank bed.
