Melding community and commitment, Covanta Energy Asia Pacific takes an active civic role in the cities of Madurai and Samalpatti in India. Subsidiaries of Covanta Energy Asia Pacific Holdings, Covanta Samalpatti and Covanta Madurai operate two power generation facilities in their respective municipalities. In addition to generating much needed energy for the neighborhoods they serve, these facilities have developed extensive programs to reach out to local residents and provide health, education, and infrastructure services.

Covanta Madurai plays an important role in providing resources to improve local health care in the second largest city in Tamil Nadu. The facility has donated surgical instruments and an air conditioning unit for a local operation theatre to enhance medical treatment. Covanta Madurai even constructed a new waiting room for patients. In addition, the facility also works closely with the state government on the Pulse Polio Eradication Programme, an initiative to eliminate the acute viral infectious disease in India.

Besides working to keep local residents healthy, Covanta Madurai also helps ensure local children have the resources they need to earn an education. The facility has helped provide lighting for several schools and annually donates notebooks for students to use.

Covanta Samalpatti also enjoys an impressive record of service and has helped turn night into day for local residents. But providing much needed streetlights to nearby villages is only one of the facility’s accomplishments. It has helped build local temples by providing construction materials and provided monies to renovate local health centers and build schools. In addition, Covanta Samalpatti has donated notebooks, uniforms, and eyeglasses to improve the life of local schoolchildren.

The facility also provides health care and free transportation for medical treatment to villagers. And, in coordination with the state government, the facility supports the Pulse Polio Eradication Program. The program is an immunization effort to prevent the disease from spreading in the community.

Having said all of the above, as per the report of Covanta, it is reported that it is planning to sell the Covanta Madurai facility by second quarter of this year.
