Yaanaimalai - Madurai Tourism

In the north-eastern outskirts of Madurai, a solid, rocky natural landmark is seen. Yaanamalai is a hill that has a striking resemblance to a seated elephant (hence the same “Yaanai Malai” – Elephant Hill). This imposing and silent backdrop is surrounded by paddy fields.

Yaanaimalai is one of the very few single rock structures of this kind. The Jains named it “Ibakudram” (the Sanskrit word “Iba” means elephant). This structure measures 22 feet (length) and 28 feet (width). With sculptures of Mahaveer, Parasvanathar and others, this hill stands testimony to the growth of Jain sect which witnessed a downfall in this region in the 7th Century AD (but was revived later).

The Monolith bears the most striking resemblance to a seated Elephant when seen from the south west direction. Palmyra trees and small bushes are a part of the landscape and during winter months, one can see bursts of yellow flowers.
