Vittavasal Madurai - Madurai Tourism

When one walks down the straight road from East Masi street leading to the eastern entrance of the Meenakshi Sundareshwar Temple, a half constructed entrance called ‘Vitta Vassal’, is seen. It is believed to be a remnant of the thirteenth century fort wall of Pandya kingdom. It is also believed that originally Tirumalai Nayak had a plan to fortify the temple and this place could have been the outer entrance to the fort. As it remains an Incomplete Gate way it is known as ‘Vitta Vassal’ which in Tamil means the abandoned gate. There is an old building, which has survived the test of time. It still stands tall although in a worn out state and a small plaque on it, tells us the story of Vittavasal.
