A beggar woman has been elected a village head, or 'mukhiya', defeating powerful candidates in panchayat or local bodies elections in Bihar.

Meanwhile, another woman, Shanti Devi, a tea stall vendor, was elected a panchayat committee member in a village in Purnea district.
