Tamil Nadu State Budget for Madurai - What is good for Madurai from the budget 2012-2013?

The Rs. 250-crore budgetary allocation made by the State Government for Madurai Corporation on Monday is very well appreciated for Madurai.

Mr.N. Sethuraman said that the allocation of Rs. 24 crore for cancer treatment centres at Madurai and Coimbatore was laudable.

Noting that the Budget had no new tax proposals except on liquor, Chamber senior president S. Rethinavelu said that the one time special allocation of Rs. 250 crore to Madurai Corporation for developing infrastructure would go a long way in ensuring free flow of traffic in the city, the lack of which has severely inhibited industrial growth.

Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (MADITSSIA) has terming the budget as industry-oriented and said that the allotment of Rs.50 crore for developing District Industries Centre in all 32 districts would help micro, small and medium enterprises in the State.

The funds would not only help the pending projects under phase one of Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNRUM) completed, but also ensure that the local body gets more funds for its infrastructure development under the Phase Two of the mission.

The Rs. 250 crore would take care of the Corporation's 30 per cent contribution to be made for the over Rs. 600 crore worth five projects taken up under the mission.  A total of Rs. 600 crore worth projects had been sanctioned under the mission with 50 per cent contribution by the Centre, 20 per cent contribution by the State and 30 per cent contribution by the local body Madurai Corporation.

The fund-starved Corporation could not make its contribution for the works that brought the construction work of underground drainage (UGD) project and the lining of Storm Water Drainage (SWD) project to a grinding halt in the last quarter of 2010. But, now it will be taken care.

Some of the highlights:

  • Budget allocates Rs.250 Crores Special Package for Madurai.
  • Regional Cancer Centre in Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital
  • 24-hr annadhanam in palani temple; one more cable car in palani temple
  • Synthetic Hockey turf in madurai
  • Regional centre for Anna Institute of Management for Madurai
  • Ramanathapuram Cooperative Spilling Mills to be revived.
Trade bodies in Madurai says this budget is a launch pad for extension of various current and future schemes.

Madurai Chithirai Festival April 22nd to May 4th 2012

The two week long Chithirai Festival is one of the biggest celebrations in Madurai. It re-enacts the wedding of Lord Sundareswarar (Lord Shiva) and Goddess Meenakshi (Lord Vishnu's sister).

When is the Chithirai Festival:

The Chithirai Festival begins on the fifth day of the bright half of the Tamil month Chitrai (April in the English calendar). In 2012, the official dates of the Chithirai Festival are from April 22-May 4.

Where is the Chithirai Festival Held:

The Chithirai Festival is held at the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The parades takes place in the streets around the temple (known as the Maasi streets).

How is the Chithirai Festival Celebrated:

The Chithirai Festival begins with a flag hoisting ceremony on the first day, however the most important celebrations occur towards the end of the festival. In 2012, the most important dates are:
  • April 30: Coronation of the Goddess Meenakshi (Pattabhishekam).
  • May 1: Procession of Goddess Meenakshi.
  • May 2: Celestial wedding of God and Goddess. The deities are paraded in their wedding attire around the temple streets, before being brought into the grandly decorated hall inside the temple.
  • May 3: Procession of temple chariots (Car Festival).
  • May 4: Return of Lord Kallazhaga (Azhagar Aatril Eranguthal).
Legend has it that Lord Kallazhaga (Lord Vishnu) came mounted on a golden horse to Madurai from Azhagar Kovil, a famous Vishnu temple near Madurai, to participate in the celestial wedding of his sister Meenakshi. However, he arrives late and misses the wedding. Furious, he gets into the river, and then proceeds back home. One of the biggest spectacles of the Chithirai Festival is this procession.

What to Expect During the Chithirai Festival:

The Chithirai Festival is a great opportunity to experience local life in Madurai, and see a traditional Hindu wedding ritual. It attracts huge crowds of people, who flock to Madurai from surrounding areas. The festival is celebrated with a great deal of excitement and hype -- with the enthusiasm of a real wedding. The celebrations extend all over the city, and the streets are flooded with devotees.

Chithirai Festival Travel Tips:

  • Most the activities take place outdoors and the weather will be hot, so wear light clothing and comfortable shoes. Also be sure to carry water and sunscreen.
  • Start early in the day.
  • Take extra care of your belonging, such as wallet and camera. It's easy to lose them in the crowd.

Madurai International Airport News and Updates - Reasons for Madurai not becoming 100% International Airport

With the Madurai Airport looking set to get international connectivity, Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has taken on lease the Commercial Important Person (CIP) Lounge in the airport and has established modern facilities such as wi-fi connectivity.

This had become imperative considering the abundant opportunities available in Madurai for export of jasmine, surgical equipment, textile made-ups, apparels, handicrafts and granite icons.

At present, these goods were exported through Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram and other airports.

Here are the reasons - why Madurai is not yet International Airport completely (100%)

Madurai airport is poised for a major leap with the decks being cleared for the operation of international flights. Madurai airport is all set to become International Airport, but no Airlines is operating yet. All approvals from Centre is provided for Madurai Airport to operate as Customs and International airport, but the airlines are not ready to operate from Madurai yet. The operators are afraid to operate of any loss. Even the Tamil nadu Chamber of Commerce had appealed in all possible ways, but no international flight yet. Only Domestic flights are operating. That is the situation today. One more reason told is - Bilateral Airport Treaties entered between India and other countries(except Srilanka) does not include Madurai.

When will Madurai become/operate International Customs Airport - Madurai Airport

The notification declaring Madurai airport as customs airport was issued by the Centre in January. Subsequently we started the works facilitating the establishment of customs counters. Now, space for customs as well as immigration counters has been earmarked. As many as ten immigration counters are at the airport.

Sankiah Pandian said that the airport was ready with all facilities required for international flight services. "We are only waiting for international flight services to commence operation ," he said. The airport was established in the year 1957 and a new swanky terminal was inaugurated in 2009 sprawling across 189,000 sq ft. Only four airlines currently operate flights to Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore and New Delhi.

In another note - Sri Lankan Airlines, Manager (Tamil Nadu and Karnataka), B. Pirathapan, said that unless the travel agents guaranteed the profitability of flight operations to Colombo, the airlines industry, which was going through a rough patch, would not come to Madurai. “We are for making profit. There should be enough number of passengers to convince our bosses to launch operations from Madurai,” he said.

The senior president of Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, S. Rethinavelu, said that the chamber had promised Air Asia to bear the initial loss, if any, caused to the airlines on operation in Madurai-Kuala Lumpur route. “We are sure there would be no loss at all,” he said.

The products of textile, rubber, jasmine and fish processing units were among the major goods that would give potential for international cargo movement. International operations would also help domestic tourism and medical tourism, he said. Around 50 to 70 passengers were going to each of foreign destinations of Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Dubai/Sharjah, Muscat and Colombo from the southern districts every day, he added.
Airport Director, Sangaiah Pandian, promised to extend all help to the airlines, including night operations from Madurai. The airliners need not bother that Madurai airport would eat into their revenues from Tiruchi.

Apart from having been declared as a ‘Customs Airport,' it also has a world-class high-tech integrated terminal built at a cost of Rs.130 crore. The runway has been extended to 7500 feet to facilitate introduction of international flights.
Chamber senior president S. Rethinavelu informed the Union Minister that there was lot of potential for both passenger and freight traffic for international flights from Madurai to Malaysia, Singapore, Muscat, Dubai, Sharjah and Sri Lanka. However, during chamber delegations to some of these countries, they were told by international air liners that, with the exception of Sri Lanka, Madurai Airport had not been included in the Bilateral Airport Treaties entered between India and those countries. This was preventing air line companies from operating international flights to Madurai Airport.

Inox is the multiplex partner of the mall, and is likely to open in September . At 2 lakh sqft, it's much smaller than the 15 lakh sqft Express Avenue mall in Chennai (the retail space in EA is 9 lakh sqft) or the 4.5 lakh sqft space of Brookfields. The mall hopes to get footfalls not just from families in the city, but also the sizeable student population from nearby institutions like the American College and the Lady Doak College . "The youth of Madurai always
complain about having to travel to Chennai or Bangalore to experience a mall and multiplex. Now they can enjoy it in their own city."The traditional retail area of Madurai has mushroomed around the Meenakshi Temple, the tourist hub of the city. After Chennai and Coimbatore, Madurai is next

"Madurai is an important feeder market to places like Virudhnagar, Nagercoil and Tirunelveli."Vishaal Mall has set aside 10,000 sqft for a food court that will feature Marry Brown and Pizza Hut among others. There will also be 10,000 sqft for fine dining and another 10,000 sqft for gaming and entertainment. Rs.12 Crore allocated to boost facelift to Madurai Tourism

Aimed at promoting Madurai as the best tourist destination in South India, the district administration has identified several tourist spots to showcase them to both foreign and domestic tourists. These spots include Vandiyur kanmoi (tank), Mariamman Teppakulam, Sathaiyar dam, Kutladampatti, Perungamanallur.

“To draw more tourists to Madurai, the district administration has chalked out various plans and taken a slew of measures in tapping its tourism potential. A detailed project report at an estimated cost of Rs15 crore has been prepared and sent to the government for approval,” U Sagayam, Collector, Madurai district said yesterday, according to a Deccan Chronicle report.

Under the tourism promotion scheme, Sagayam said several infrastructure development works including laying roads, bridges, constructing toilet facilities and creating parks would be taken up. To achieve the twin objective of conserving water resources and converting them into recreational spots, boating facilities would be arranged at Vandiyur tank, Mariamman Teppakulam and Sathaiyar dam.

As regards the Vandiyur tank, plans are afoot to deepen and create an island-like structure at the centre of the tank and beautify the edges along with the formation of an eco-heritage walkway. Efforts were on for permanent storage of water at Mariamman Teppakulam where boating would be made available till 7 pm daily after ensuring that all safety measures are in place.

The central Mandapam in the tank would be beautified with installation of statues to depict Tamil culture. Kutladampatti that is home to waterfalls would have pucca roads. “Under Nabard scheme, roads were being laid for a distance of 5 km from the village to the falls at a cost of Rs 39 lakh,” Sagayam said.

Sagayam added, “Aside from this, the historic building where Mahatma Gandhi gave up his formal attire and changed to simple khadi dhoti and a shawl to identify himself with the common man will be converted into a memorial. Also, in memory of the 16 persons killed for fighting against the Criminal Tribes Act of the British at Perungamanallur near Usilampatti in 1920, a memorial would be raised.”

Who said Madurai is not industrialized? No Industries in madurai? No Never

Madurai, which is known to the world as a Temple City has a real strong industrial background. The TVS group's growth which looks really massive started from their establishment in Madurai dates back to the year 1911. They have their units of TVS Tyres (Srichakra tyres), ZF Electronics TVS, TVS InterConnect Systems (TVS ICS), Firestone TVS, Sundaram Brake Linings, Sundaram Fasteners ltd, Sundaram sewing needles, Sundaram textiles, TVS Rubber. And none could forget the Madura Coats which was involved in Coat and fabric production and their world known brands Louis Philippe, Van Heusen, Peter England, Allen Solly, Byford and San frisco. Now, they do produce only sewing threads here. TAFE Tractors have their plant here near Vadipatti. Fenner ltd that has been acquired by JK Tyres has 3 of their plants in Madurai and surrounding areas for manufacturing Industrial belts. PRP Granites and exports is a real big industry in Madurai. One could find numerous small and medium scale industries in SIPCOT and SIDCO of Kappalur, K.Pudur, Urangaanpatti and Nilakottai region. And we come across many industrial news then and
there which shows that the investors are interested to invest in Madurai.
